Cubs blank slumping Giants 7-0 (AP)

SAN FRANCISCO ? Randy Wells didn't get very far after throwing his first career complete game. The Chicago Cubs right-hander was nailed in the face by a shaving cream pie.

It wasn't the way Wells planned to celebrate his birthday, but after holding the defending World Series champion San Francisco Giants to just two hits, no one complained.

Wells matched his season high of seven strikeouts and allowed only two runners to reach second base, and the Cubs backed him with four home runs ? including three off San Francisco ace Tim Lincecum ? in a 7-0 rout of the Giants on Monday night.

"The last time I got shaving cream in the face was (my) first win, so it was pretty fun," said Wells, who has won four straight decisions. "It was pretty cool. I came close last year in St. Louis but I got lifted in the ninth. It was very special for me to beat a Cy Young Award guy."

Wells (6-4) faced only four batters over the minimum and walked one while winning his third consecutive start on the road. Wells, who hasn't lost since July 28, improved to 2-1 in four career starts against the Giants.

San Francisco managed only a two-out double by Andres Torres in the third and Mike Fontenot's pinch-hit single with one out in the eighth.

That continues to be a big problem for the Giants, who went into August with a two-game lead in the division. Now San Francisco needs a strong finish to avoid missing out on the postseason altogether.

The Giants are five games behind the first-place Diamondbacks with 27 games to play. At the same point a year ago, they were three games out of the division lead before going 18-8 in September.

"(Wells) pitched great ... but everybody that is going out there is throwing great right now," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "That's what makes it tough. They outplayed us, outpitched us, outdid everything against us."

"You try and make (Lincecum) work and throw a lot of pitches," said DeWitt, who tripled and scored in the ninth. "Runs are hard to come by against a guy like that. We were able to score couple tonight."

Lincecum had allowed only five runs over his previous five starts. He pitched out of jams in the first and sixth but gave up solo home runs to Soriano and Soto before DeWitt's three-run blast in the seventh.

The two-time NL Cy Young Award winner finished with four walks and four strikeouts. He needs seven more to reach 200 for the fourth consecutive season.

Soriano's home run was his 23rd of the season, one shy of tying Pena and Aramis Ramirez for the team lead.

The other three home runs all came in the seventh, including Pena's solo shot off reliever Steve Edlefsen. It's the first time the Cubs have hit three homers in one inning since June 9, 2010.

"We swung the bats great and Wellsie was something else," Chicago manager Mike Quade said. "To do that kind of damage against Lincecum was a huge plus. The offense was fantastic."

Notes: Soto's homer leading off the seventh snapped an 0-for-25 streak by the Cubs' catcher. ... RHP Matt Garza (6-10) starts for the Cubs on Tuesday and will make his first career appearance against the Giants. Garza has only two wins and a 5.07 ERA on the road this season.

DAEGU, South Korea (AP) ? One of the most anticipated events of the world championships turned into one of the most controversial, with Olympic champion Dayron Robles disqualified for interfering with Chinese star Liu Xiang in a 110-meter hurdle race awarded to Jason Richardson of the United States.

Robles finished in 13.14 seconds, followed by Richardson in 13.16 and Liu in 13.27. American David Oliver was a pre-race favorite but crossed the line fifth.

The Americans won a sprint title for sure when Carmelita Jeter rallied to win the 100, defeating Jamaican veteran Veronica Campbell-Brown. Kelly-Ann Baptiste of Trinidad and Tobago took the bronze.

The U.S. was expected to top the women's 400, but it was Amantle Montsho who gave Botswana its first medal at a world championship by taking the gold.

Allyson Felix, a three-time world champion in the 200, was even with Montsho as they entered the final straight but couldn't overtake her in the stretch. Felix was looking for a 200-400 double at the worlds and two relay titles as well.

Montsho won in a national record time of 49.56 seconds. Felix was second in 49.59 and Anastasiya Kapachinskaya of Russia was third in 50.24.

Defending champion Sanya Richards-Ross of the U.S. was seventh in 51.32.

Also, Pawel Wojciechowski of Poland won gold the pole vault, clearing 19 feet, 4? inches. He beat Lazaro Borges of Cuba, who cleared the same height, because of fewer misses. Favorite Renaud Lavillenie of France took the bronze.

FDA Approves Pfizer Lung Cancer Drug and Companion Abbot Test ...

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today approved Pfizer's (NYSE: PFE) Xalkori to treat certain patients with late-stage (locally advanced or metastatic), non-small cell lung cancers who express the abnormal anaplastic lymphoma kinase gene.

Xalkori is being approved with a companion diagnostic test that will help determine if a patient has the abnormal ALK gene, a first-of-a-kind genetic test called the Vysis ALK Break Apart FISH Probe Kit from Abbot Laboratories (NYSE: ABT). It is the second such targeted therapy approved by the FDA this year.

This ALK gene abnormality causes cancer development and growth. About 1 percent to 7 percent of those with NSCLC have the ALK gene abnormality. Patients with this form of lung cancer are typically non-smokers. Xalkori works by blocking certain proteins called kinases, including the protein produced by the abnormal ALK gene. Xalkori is a pill taken twice a day as a single-agent treatment.

?The approval of Xalkori with a specific test allows the selection of patients who are more likely to respond to the drug? said Richard Pazdur, M.D., director of the Office of Oncology Drug Products in the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. ?Targeted therapies such as Xalkori are important options for treating patients with this disease and may ultimately result in fewer side effects.?

Xalkori's safety and effectiveness were established in two multi-center, single-arm studies enrolling a total of 255 patients with late-stage ALK-positive NSCLC. A sample of a patient's lung cancer tissue was collected and tested for the ALK gene abnormality prior to study enrollment. The studies were designed to measure objective response rate, the percentage of patients who experienced complete or partial cancer shrinkage. Most patients in the studies had received prior chemotherapy.

In one study, the objective response rate was 50 percent with a median response duration of 42 weeks. In another, the objective response rate was 61 percent with a median response duration of 48 weeks.

The FDA based its approval of the Vysis ALK Break Apart FISH Probe Kit on data from one of the studies.

Xalkori was reviewed under the FDA's priority review program, which provides for an expedited six-month review of drugs that may offer major advances in treatment or that provide a treatment when no adequate therapy exists.

Xalkori is being approved under the FDA's accelerated approval program, which allows the agency to approve a drug to treat a serious disease based on clinical data showing that the drug has an effect on an endpoint that is reasonably likely to predict a clinical benefit to patients. The program is designed to provide patients with earlier access to promising new drugs, followed by further studies to confirm the drug's clinical benefit.

Xalkori and the companion Vysis ALK Break Apart FISH Probe Kit were approved ahead of the drug's Sept. 30, 2011, FDA review goal date and the companion diagnostics' Sept. 28, 2011, review goal date.

?The trend in oncology research continues towards targeted therapies,? said Alberto Gutierrez, Ph.D., director of the Office of In Vitro Diagnostic Device Evaluation and Safety in the FDA's Center for Devices and Radiological Health. ?This test is an example of the important role companion diagnostics play in determining that the safest and most effective treatments are promptly delivered to patients living with serious and life-threatening diseases.?

The most common side effects reported in patients receiving Xalkori included vision disorders, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, swelling (edema), and constipation. Vision disorders included visual impairment, flashes of light, blurred vision, floaters, double vision, sensitivity to light, and visual field defects. Xalkori use has also been associated with inflammation of the lung tissue (pneumonitis), which can be life-threatening. Patients with treatment-related pneumonitis should permanently stop treatment with Xalkori. The drug should not be used in pregnant women.

In July 2011, FDA issued a draft guidance industry on the agency's policy for reviewing a companion diagnostic and the corresponding drug therapy. The guidance is currently available for public comment.

(Note: San Juan is the embarkation port for each ship.) Port authorities from San Juan limited traffic in and out of the port starting at approximately 12:30 p.m. on Sunday.

In Royal Caribbean's case, passengers from Serenade of the Seas were not notified of the change in plans.

One of those stranded passengers was Nicole Washington, who told CBS Miami that she arrived at the port shortly after 5 p.m. to find the terminal closed and Serenade of the Seas gone. According to Royal Caribbean, there wasn't time to alert the passengers of the early exit. "Since this decision was made by the Port of San Juan on Sunday while the ship was docked alongside, there was no way to notify our guests of this change in departure time," the line said in the statement. The line did, however, have port agents at the pier assisting guests who did not arrive in time to meet the ship.

Washington's response: "I can't believe this big billion-dollar company couldn't have contacted me to tell me the ship was leaving early. They had my phone number!"

For Carnival's part, spokesman Vance Gulliksen tells Cruise Critic that the line "tried to contact all guests who didn't make the ship and was successful in reaching most of them."

Hotel accommodations and flights to Aruba to meet the ship were provided to the 15 Serenade passengers who had booked the air/sea package through Royal Caribbean. The balance of cruise-only passengers were, upon arrival at the cruise terminal, "advised of hotel availability in San Juan," said the line. The expense of both the potential hotel stay and airfare to reach the ship was the passengers' responsibility ? or covered by their travel insurance, depending on the policy ? because the early departure was a weather-related incident.

Carnival's response was markedly different.
