If you've been following this blog for a while now you'll note that there has been one major change over the past number of years to have taken place that has massively altered my day to day fatherhood: moving closer to family. For a number of years my family was quite literally hours and hours away from any family that might want to visit. As a consequence there were no random drop-ins by our families. There were no unplanned visits (in fact, there were very few visits at all because of the distance). So what happened? Well, for one, our son wasn't able to bond with his aunts and uncles and grandparents as well as we would have liked (and, of course, they would have really liked to bond with him better too). Upon moving back all of this changed. I realized this when our son started asking for the "uncle move."
What is an "uncle move?" Well, this particular move (created by this particular uncle) involved our son sitting on his shoulders while he prompted our son to "let go" and fall backwards while the wonderful uncle held onto his feet. Nothing particularly complex or dangerous, but our son was quite afraid at the beginning: "let go?" Well, he did and he laughed and he had fun and he asked (incessantly) for the "uncle move." Over and over again. And it wasn't until his uncle had landed a job out of town, weeks later, that I realized he really did have a strong bond with the family we were away from for so long, because he asked for the "uncle move" even in that uncle's long absences. And when that uncle visited again our son recognized that uncle by name and excitedly asked for the "uncle move" again. It's official: our son has a family who loves him -- and he loves them back.

More insecurity, civilian casualties in Afghanistan: U.N. (Reuters)
KABUL (Reuters) ? Afghanistan has become more insecure in 2011 from a year ago, with a sharp rise in security incidents and higher numbers of civilian casualties, displaced people and complex suicide attacks, a U.N report said on Wednesday.
The total number of security incidents recorded during the first eight months of the year represented a nearly 40 percent rise from the same period of 2010.
And while most violence -- about two-thirds -- was concentrated in the country's south and southeast, suicide attacks became more common outside that area, with the central region accounting for one in five.
The number of complex suicide attacks also jumped by half in the year to date, compared with a year earlier, and made up a greater portion of all suicide attacks.
Civilian casualties, already at record levels for the first half of the year, rose 5 percent in the June-August period compared with last year, with insurgents linked to three quarters of those deaths and injuries.
The report to the U.N. Security Council by Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon highlights the challenges facing Afghanistan's troubled government and the NATO-led coalition, which started its gradual handover of security responsibility to Afghan police and the army in July.
The report said the transition areas, which included Bamiyan and Panjshir provinces and southern Lashkar Gah city "continue to face a resilient insurgency that is attempting to challenge the capacity of the Afghan forces."
A total of 1,841 civilian deaths and injuries were recorded from June to August, of which 282, or 12 percent, were attributed to Afghan or foreign forces.
Air strikes were the leading cause of deaths by coalition forces, killing 38 civilians in July, the highest number recorded for any month since February 2010.
The coalition does not regularly publish details of civilian casualties and declined immediate comment on the U.N.'s figures.

It also noted a 65 percent increase in eradication of opium poppy fields in 2011 from a year earlier, although it said the attacks on eradication teams had sharply increased, with 48 such incidents this year, compared with 12 in 2012.

Hulu expands Miramax streaming deal to include Japan (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? Miramax has signed a multi-year agreement with Hulu to offer films such as "Swingers" and "Pulp Fiction" in Japan, the studio announced on Tuesday.
The move follows on the heels of a larger domestic deal between the streaming service and the studio that was unveiled last June. As part of the pact, Miramax films are currently available to stream through the Hulu Plus subscription service.
Financial terms of the Japanese deal were not disclosed. The Miramax titles are now available to Japanese users.
Under its new ownership, a consortium of investors that includes construction magnate Ron Tutor, Miramax has put a priority on exploiting its library of Oscar-winning titles.
In addition to the Hulu pacts, the studio has also inked deals with Netflix.
Films from the Miramax library that will be available to Hulu subscribers in Japan include "Chocolat," "The English Patient," "From Dusk Till Dawn," "Gone Baby Gone," "Good Will Hunting," "Jackie Brown," "There Will Be Blood," "Scream" and "Spy Kids."

Columbus statue runs aground in Puerto Rico
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico?? It would be the tallest structure in the Caribbean and among the tallest statues in the world, a monument to Christopher Columbus in a region where he has not been regarded highly for many years.
So far, though, the nearly 300-foot (92-meter) statue of The Great Explorer just seems like a monumental morass or perhaps a colossal joke. Originally intended to grace the skies of a major U.S. city, it has been shuffled from one locale to another and lies in pieces as a businessman and the mayor of the small Puerto Rican town of Arecibo try to finally erect it overlooking the Atlantic Ocean on the island's north coast.
But this still may not be the final chapter in what has so far been a 20-year saga. The statue's final resting place is far from certain: Its backers must gather a long list of permits, including from the Federal Aviation Administration, to install a monument so tall it could interfere with air traffic. And now, Puerto Rican officials are competing to bring it to their parts of the island as a lure to tourists.
Then there is the fact that the roughly 600-ton (544-metric ton) statue, like many other large-scale public works, inspires more criticism than awe, especially since Columbus is commonly viewed now as the harbinger of genocide rather than the discoverer of the New World.
"To be honest, it's a monstrosity," says Cristina Rivera, a longtime activist against the creation of private beaches in Arecibo who has been vocal about her opposition to erecting a giant Columbus in her town. "Why do we have to bring such an exaggerated piece of work here?"
It's just that kind of reaction that has doomed the project in the past and could do so again.
Russian artist Zurab Tsereteli, 77, built the statue in 1991 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of Columbus' 1492 arrival in the Western Hemisphere. The artist is internationally renowned for giant, expensive and sometimes unwanted works. But his pieces have found a home in the U.S. before, including in front of the United Nations headquarters in New York, and he remains confident his rendition of the Great Explorer will eventually reach a destination.
Tsereteli, in an email interview with The Associated Press, notes that even the Statue of Liberty and the Eiffel Tower faced criticism and challenges.
"Now they are symbols," he said. "Without those symbols, those places would be unimaginable."
During a visit to Russia in 1990, U.S. President George H. W. Bush stopped by Tsereteli's studio in Moscow and picked one Columbus model out of three presented to him. In September 1994, Tsereteli traveled to the U.S. with then-Russian President Boris Yeltsin and presented the chosen model to President Bill Clinton.
South Florida was one of the first proposed locations for the statue, which features Columbus with shoulder-length hair, an unusually sharp and straight nose and large and slightly protruding eyes reminiscent of a Cubist painting.

One county commissioner joked it would make a good artificial reef while another suggested they could just display the head and not bother with the rest of the statue. Some also worried about erecting something that would pay homage to a person associated with slave trading and brutal colonization.
The statue then made its rounds through New York, Ohio and Maryland, with no success.
"Various private organizations said they would put it up," said Emily Madoff, Tsereteli's spokeswoman. "Then they realize what's involved in something so big. ... You just don't plunk it on top of the land."
In 1998, Puerto Rican Gov. Pedro Rosello accepted it as a gift and spent $2.4 million in public funds to bring it to the island. Then the mayor of Catano, a suburb of San Juan that draws thousands of tourists to its Bacardi rum distillery, requested the statue.
But the plan ran into trouble when aviation authorities said the proposed location would interfere with flight paths, and residents whose homes would have to be demolished to make way for the statue protested the plans. Then Columbus went into storage. "It was awful, really awful," Madoff said. "It just sat there."
In 2008, a port management company, Holland Group Ports Investments, agreed to take the statue and store it in the western coastal city of Mayaguez, where it remains. A Russian crew recently flew there and ensured that most of the 2,700 pieces still fit together as plans seemed to move forward in Arecibo.

MANILA (Agencies): An employees? union says it will fight a plan by Philippine Airlines to outsource thousands of jobs in catering, ground handling and telephone reservations. Union leader Gerry Rivera said Sunday only a small number of workers have accepted separation packages offered by the airline. PAL President Jaime Bautista announced last month that about 2,600 employees will be laid off by Sept. 30 but could seek employment with companies contracted to take over the airline services. PAL says it will proceed with the outsourcing plan and will temporarily reduce domestic and international flights during the transition. The layoffs will cut PAL?s staff to 5,000 and are part of a survival plan launched in 2010 after it lost $312 million in the previous two years.

Showtime goes social, launches "second screen" app (Reuters)
LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? Showtime is going social.
The network announced on Monday the launch of a new app, appropriately dubbed "Showtime Social," that will aggregate content about its shows and facilitate online social interaction as its programs air live.
This is the latest effort by a major content company to integrate its products with social media. Netflix, Hulu, Spotify and many others hopped on the Facebook bandwagon last week, but more similar to this initiative was Comedy Central's social media dashboard for the Charlie Sheen Roast, which aired September 19.
Like the dashboard, this app is intended to be a "second screen viewing experience," meaning that one interacts with others on an iPad while watching TV.
Viewers can look at reviews, Facebook comments and Twitter posts about a show while it airs, with much of the online content corresponding to specific moments in the shows.
You can engage in conversations about the show -- and react on social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter.
Showtime is also offering other opportunities for information and interactivity like polls based on events in the show, behind-the-scenes videos, photo galleries, webisodes, and in some cases, full episodes.
The app is being launched in conjunction with the season finales of "Weeds" and "The Big C," and in anticipation of the premieres of "Dexter" and "Homeland" this Sunday.

Perry on shaky ground? Doubts among some in GOP (AP)
EXETER, N.H. ? Rick Perry is struggling.
Republicans in early voting states, once excited about the Texas governor's presidential bid, are openly questioning the strength of his candidacy. High expectations have been met by the sudden national scrutiny that comes with the front-runner bull's-eye.
Perry is leading national polls, but he is also facing intensifying criticism from the right and left. Some Republicans in Iowa and New Hampshire are expressing doubts, especially after debates in which rivals raised questions about his record on immigration, public health and Social Security.
One national immigration group says Perry is finished. Conservatives are slamming his support of education benefits for illegal immigrants.
The campaign dismisses the criticism. After all, supporters say, he entered the presidential race just six weeks ago.
Things looked rosier then. Perry arrived to great fanfare and seemed poised to steal significant support from his top rival, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney. Many influential GOP activists saw Perry, with his executive experience and good jobs record, as an attractive alternative to Romney, who has struggled to win over conservatives who make up a sizeable portion of the party base.
Since then, the Texan has campaigned repeatedly in New Hampshire and Iowa, states that host the nation's first presidential voting contests in roughly four months.
And unaligned Republicans in those states ? including some who backed Romney four years ago and are looking for an alternative ? have watched Perry closely this month to see if the early buzz would become lasting campaign strength. But his debate performances, including bobbled attempts Thursday night in Florida at painting Romney as a flip-flopper, did not impress some influential activists.
"Perry has been doing damage to himself over the last couple weeks," said Jamie Burnett, a New Hampshire-based Republican who led Romney's political operation here four years ago but is unaligned this year. "Perry's on shaky ground, but I'm not willing to say there's no path to victory. But he's definitely not in the place he was during the first two weeks of his campaign."
In Thursday night's debate, Perry went after Romney. But it didn't always go smoothly.
"I think Americans just don't know sometimes which Mitt Romney they're dealing with," Perry said then. "Is it the Mitt Romney that was on the side of ? against the Second Amendment before he was for the Second Amendment? Was it ? was before ? he was before the social programs from the standpoint of ? he was for standing up for Roe versus Wade before he was against first ? Roe versus Wade?"
He also suggested that those who oppose Texas' immigration law are heartless and he gave a wobbly response to a question on Pakistan, making him seem unprepared.
"The guy just isn't ready for prime time. It's not the issues themselves. It's how he handles them," said Doug Gross, a Des Moines lawyer who was Romney's Iowa co-chairman in 2008 but isn't backing any one candidate yet this year. "He doesn't look like a president."
Veteran Republican strategist Mary Matalin, who is not affiliated with any of the 2012 campaigns and is neutral, said that while debating is not Perry's strong suit, it's only one aspect of the early campaign.
"His support in the states that are the foundation of his strategy is not slipping," Matalin said. "Romney has been consistently really good, is solidifying his establishment support, but is far from closing the deal with conservatives."
Activists have discovered policy differences as they get to know Perry better.
He has drawn sharp criticism for requiring 6th-grade girls in Texas to be vaccinated against a sexually transmitted virus that can cause cancer, a position that frustrates libertarians and social conservatives alike. And on immigration, Perry's opposition to a border fence and support for education benefits for illegal immigrants who came to the country as children have been unpleasantly eye-opening to some in Iowa.
"Immigration and the vaccines are just tough sells," said former state GOP chairman Richard Schwarm, a Romney supporter in 2008 who has not yet committed to a candidate. "There are a lot of things people like about him, but those issues cause people a lot of problems."
Some national groups have been less diplomatic.
"Rick Perry is finished," said Americans for Legal Immigration's campaign arm in a statement Friday.
Perry also raised eyebrows for coming in a surprising fourth in a New Hampshire poll this week, getting just 8 percent and ranking well behind Romney while also trailing Texas Rep. Ron Paul and former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman.
Rivals are looking to take advantage of Perry's woes in Iowa.
Romney is expected to step up his campaign presence in the state after visiting only twice this year. And Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann is focusing on Iowa to reclaim the attention she stirred in the state before Perry entered the race.
Top Perry strategist Dave Carney said the notion the governor is floundering is "more wishful thinking from other camps."
"Rick Perry has a solid record on the most important issues the voters care about. And we have only been in the race for five weeks. Since we started so far behind in every way we have a while to go until we catch up," Carney said.
The campaign hopes for a boost at the end of the month when it releases its quarterly fundraising totals, Perry's first such report.
He is known as a prolific fundraiser and has devoted considerable energy to filling his campaign coffers. A strong showing could help quiet questions.
Nationally, Republican voters so far have reported stronger positive feelings for Perry than for Romney, especially among self-described conservatives, according to a recent Associated Press-GfK poll. Perry's weakness has been his lower appeal among moderate Republicans, who view Romney markedly more favorably. The findings underscore Romney's effort to present himself as an economic conservative capable of drawing independent voters in a head-to-head campaign with Obama.
Regardless of the polling, some voters in Florida are grimacing.
"I don't think he did very well in the debate," said Doyle Thomas, a 70-year-old retired attorney from Cross City, Fla., in rural Dixie County. "He couldn't explain his positions."
Thomas said he likes Perry but isn't ready to sign on.
"If I could be king for a day, I'd be with Herman Cain. But I can't support him," he said. "I personally like Sarah Palin, but there ain't no way she can be elected." He sighed and shook his head. "I'll probably wind up with Romney because, more than anything, what I want to do is to defeat Obama."
Back in New Hampshire, Rep. Frank Guinta emphasized that there were still four months until the primary.
"Perry has a very high level of expectation to meet. If he doesn't hit it 100 percent, people start to ask questions," he said. "The bottom line is people are still talking about Rick Perry. It would be a mistake to count him out."

The Living Will and the Power of Attorney for Personal Care (the ?POAPC?) are believed by many members of the public to be one and the same thing. Although they are often incorporated into the same document, they serve entirely different functions.
Recent studies indicate that the Living Will is generally an ineffective legal document from a doctor?s perspective. Clients, particularly those of advanced age or experiencing health issues, should ensure that they have an effective continuing POAPC in place.
Under a POAPC, the signatory appoints another individual (the attorney) to make future healthcare decisions. In the modern form, the POAPC is expressed to be ?continuing? as its legal validity continues even after the signatory suffers any level of mental incompetence or physical disability preventing him or her from providing healthcare instructions. From the doctor?s perspective, the continuing POAPC is the document of last resort when consent cannot be obtained from the patient.
The Living Will is a statement by the signatory of his or her desire for particular types of healthcare in the future, most often in circumstances where life support is required.
The Living Will is often ignored by doctors for a number of reasons. One reason is that the Living Will may be interpreted as an expression of mere desire as opposed to a document of strict instruction. If the signatory states that he or she merely ?wishes? that life support be discontinued at a certain time, that wish need not and often will not be followed by doctors.
Another reason is that the prediction of which particular medical malady a person may ultimately suffer and which medical procedure may be considered or preferred on any given day in the future is highly speculative. As one doctor has stated ?in medicine, you can?t talk about what you want ? you can only talk about what you don?t want?.
Many other practical issues concerning the Living Will have been identified over the years. The fundamental medical issue remains that, even if the language is perfectly clear, it is difficult for the doctor to conclude that the patient consented to a procedure knowing all of the risks and benefits as known to the doctor on the day the decision is to be made. The possible lack of informed consent causes the physician to pause and ultimately err on the side of providing care.
Clients with strong opinions on their future medical care may continue to instruct counsel to draft a Living Will, however, a clearly worded, continuing POAPC remains the legal document of choice.

Sprint reportedly capping its mobile hotspot plans October 2nd
If Sprint's myriad policy changes are part of the company's strategy update, perhaps we're not looking forward to October 7th's event after all. The latest bout in a series of gut-punching cost-cutting moves is the elimination of "unlimited" in the Now Network's $30 mobile hotspot add-on; according to a leaked employee memo uncovered by SprintFeed, October 2nd is the dreadful date in which all unlimited plans (sorry Sprintsters, there's no grandfathering) will be given a limit of 5GB, and any overage will be charged five cents per MB. It appears that only phones will be affected, leaving tableteurs safe for now. So if you're currently using the hotspot feature, enjoy the last few solid days of sweet downloading while you can.
