Their study, which appears in the journal Neuron, points to a mechanism in the brain that allows for this coordination and may have implications for rehabilitation and prosthetics.
Researchers have sought to understand the neurological processes behind eye and arm movements. For example, when you reach for an object, what goes on in our brains so that our eyes and arms are in sync? Such coordination is central to the way different systems of the brain communicate with each other, and these undertakings are surprisingly complicated -- due to differences in weight, for instance, the arm takes longer than the eye to move.
The question is vital to rehabilitation -- a better understanding of these neurological processes may help address the needs of those who have suffered brain injuries and struggle to coordinate movements among different parts of the body. In addition, new insights in this area could lead to more advanced neural prosthetics, which are artificial extensions to the body that restore or supplement function of the nervous system lost during disease or injury. Currently, these devices are somewhat primitive given our relatively limited knowledge of how the brain works to coordinate movement.
In their study, the NYU researchers examined the neurological activity of macaque monkeys while the subjects performed a variety of tasks that required them to either reach and to simultaneously employ rapid eye movements or to only use rapid eye movements, also known as saccades.
The resulting readings revealed significant coherent patterns of firing of neurons in the brain's posterior parietal cortex (PPC) when both the eyes and arms were required to move for the same task, but not for tasks that involved only saccades. The patterns of firing were found in regions of the PPC that are specialized for moving either the eye or the arm.
Coherent patterns of firing may be due to these different brain areas communicating when coordinating movement, the research team concluded.
"We think we have a mechanism for coordination," explained Bijan Pesaran, a professor in NYU's Center for Neuroscience and the study's senior author, adding that the finding is only a step and additional study is likely to reveal a more complex process. "Our findings show it is the patterns of activity in a specific region of the brain just prior to both saccades and reaching that are important."
In addition, their data showed a coordination of movement between the eyes and arms.
"The brain adjusts timing of eye movements, depending on how long it takes to start moving the arm," Pesaran explained. "Our study is asking how information flows between the arm and eye movement systems, and it shows how coherent patterns of neural activity are important to this communication."
The study's other co-authors were Heather Dean and Maureen Hagan, postdoctoral fellows in NYU's Center for Neural Science.
The research was supported by grants from: the National Science Foundation; the National Institutes of Health; NYSTAR; the Sloan Fondation; the McKnight Endowment Fund for Neuroscience; and the Burroughs Wellcome Fund.

Marine biologists are starting to get a good idea now of how squid hear and how they react to sounds in the ocean.
It is only recently that scientists have come to accept that cephalopods have any auditory capability at all.
But new experiments show noises of varying loudness and frequency will elicit a range of behaviours in the animals - such as jetting or inking, and even a change of colour.
The research has been featured at the biennial Ocean Sciences Meeting.
It was presented by Aran Mooney from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) of Massachusetts, US.
He is interested in squid because they represent something of a keystone species in the ocean, sitting right at the heart of many food webs. If they are not the predator in those webs, they will almost certainly be the prey.
And that makes it important to know whether anything we may be doing in the oceans could be unsettling them.
"We produce a lot of noise through exploration of the oceans, scientific research, oil drilling, gas exploration and commercial shipping," Dr Mooney tells BBC News.
"A lot of that is low-frequency noise, which is what squid detect. And if we're influencing these animals then presumably we could change their behaviour."
Previous work at WHOI's Sensory Physiology and Sensory Ecology Lab had established that squid could hear sounds in the range of 50Hz to 500Hz; but they are best below 300Hz. It is the same sort of range as fish.
The squid use two closely spaced organs called statocysts to sense sound.
"I think of a statocyst as an inside-out tennis ball," explains Dr Mooney.
"It's got hairs on the inside and this little dense calcium stone that sits on those hair cells.
"What happens is that the sound wave actually moves the squid back and forth, and this dense object stays relatively still. It bends the hair cells and generates a nerve response to the brain."
The latest research has attempted to gauge exactly what sound means to the squid, and how they might use it.
In a tank in his lab, Dr Mooney plays noises of varying loudness and frequency to the animals, and watches for their response. He has been able to map how the different levels of sound will prompt the cephalopods into different behaviours.
"They react in about 10 milliseconds," he says. "That's really fast; it's essentially a reflex. That's really important in terms of behavioural responses because they're not thinking about processing it; they're not deciding whether they should react - they're just doing it.
And he adds: "The responses can be really dynamic. They can be a change in colour; they can be jetting (moving quickly) or inking responses. Squid are also very cool because you can look at a range of colour changes - is it a really startling colour change or a more subtle change?
"Squid can probably use their hearing to find their way around the environment - to sense the soundscape of the environment; for example, to find their way towards a reef or away from a reef, towards the surface or away from the surface."
The research to date has concentrated on the longfin species (Loligo pealei), an important fishery on the East Coast of the US. But Dr Mooney plans to extend his studies to other cephalopods, such as another Loligo species on the West Coast and the Humboldt squid, which represent the largest invertebrate fishery in the world. Already in the lab, work has started on cuttlefish.
"They will ink more and jet more," says Dr Mooney. "We're finding subtle differences between the species that I wouldn't necessarily have expected. You just don't know until you try it. Go to octopuses and you may get a different response again; and the same is true with the really big squid."
Getting a giant squid into the WHOI tank might prove problematic. These creatures are rarely sighted, let along caught; and certainly not alive. But ongoing research is trying to establish more details about the functioning of squid statocysts, and from that information it may be possible to make some useful predictions about the auditory talents of the oceans' largest cephalopods.

Q: My boyfriend and I had a great studio apartment for one year. It was our first place and we loved buying all of the little household items that make a house a home. I had a great job and, even though I was the only one working, my credit was good.
Then just a few months after we moved in, I was fired from my job and my boyfriend was still looking for work. I was unemployed for four months, but we still managed to pay rent, just not on time.
I finally got a low-income job and we struggled the rest of the year to pay rent. We paid partial rent throughout the month when we had some cash but not once did we pay the mounting late fees. Our landlord was sympathetic and ultimately waived the late fees, but said we couldn't renew our lease because of late payments.
We currently live with our parents and want to get another place soon because now we both have decent-paying jobs. How hard is it going to be to find another place because of our past rental history, even though we can afford to pay rent on time? Do you have any suggestions for us?
A: As many have learned in the last few years, building up your credit worthiness and the ubiquitous FICO score can take a long time, but can be destroyed very quickly. Of course, timing is a key component. The U.S. has just gone through a business cycle in which credit was clearly extended to too many people. Whether that is the fault of the borrowers or the lenders is the great debate now.
But at this time and with the economic downturn swinging the "easy credit" pendulum to the "tight credit" side, you are certainly not alone with this challenge. I am sure that you are anxious to get back to having a place of your own and it can be difficult to find yourself back home with your parents, but a lot of patience will be required.
I would suggest that you live below your means for a while in all aspects of your lifestyle and not just in your housing expenses. Your goal should be to live with your parents and live frugally in all ways until you can save up several months' worth of living expenses. By building a cash nest egg you will then be able to go out and search for a new place with the peace of mind that you can really afford to live there.
You should also be forthcoming with your new landlord and explain your situation. You may be surprised, but my experience is that most landlords are owners of investment property because they went through the same type of process of living below their means and were committed to delayed gratification, a concept that is exceedingly rare these days.
Of course, I am not suggesting that a savvy landlord will be willing to just listen to you describe your newfound financial approach and will hand you the keys! No, he or she will want you to pay a larger-than-normal security deposit to back up your story. You might even have to pay a security deposit that is equal to two months' rent so the landlord can be confident that another job setback will allow him or her plenty of time and the financial protection in case an eviction is necessary.
While I think there are many benefits for you and your boyfriend in my proposed plan, you could also increase your chances of finding a new landlord willing to rent to you if you have a co-signer. You may start out pursuing the "living below your means back at home with Mom and Dad" only to find that times have changed and the house you may have grown up in is no longer big enough.
In that case, your parents may be very willing to assist you as a guarantor or co-signer on a lease that would get you into your own place.

Many years ago while traveling through Central America, my companions and I stumbled upon a lady selling tacos by the side of the road.
Her hands were stained blue from preparing tortilla dough with blue cornmeal, which she formed into flat discs then slapped onto a comal (griddle) propped over a small fire. Minutes later, she removed the bubbly tortillas, stuffed them with grilled beef and raw onions and distributed them to me and my hungry friends in exchange for a handful of centavos (Guatemalan coin currency). That was the first time I had tacos prepared this way.
Luckily for us, we can find many Latin American establishments here in metro Atlanta offering tacos similar to that cheap, roadside version I sampled years ago.
I culled a shortlist of places scattered around town where you can go get your taco fix and for around a dollar each. However, there is a caveat to the price: All establishments offer these dollar tacos as miniature versions. Two corn tortillas measuring about 3 inches in diameter come topped with your choice of meat, seafood or beans, and sometimes additionally dressed with nothing more than cilantro and onions.

Alvarado?s on Buford Highway sells larger tacos, but they are also pricier. The restaurant does not advertise the miniature versions well, but ask for them; they do exist and are only 99 cents each. And if you are a night owl, you also can make use of Alvarado?s drive-thru, which is open 24 hours a day, every day.
My companions and I sample tacos filled with carne asada (steak), carnitas (marinated pork), fish, bean and lengua (tongue). The crunchy, fried fish taco paired with a mild jalapeno cream sauce stands out as a favorite, as does the soft, tender lengua that dissolves in the mouth (no pun intended). Unfortunately, I have to drown the dry and lackluster carne asada and carnitas tacos in salsa from the restaurant?s salsa bar to urge any flavor out of them.
Tacos La Villa
Things pick up at Smyrna?s Tacos La Villa off Cobb Parkway. The taqueria previously ran in the back of a nearby Hispanic market, Super Mercado La Villa, but it eventually took over a defunct Quiznos a few stores down.
Meat, chorizo sausage and offal tacos ($1) come hot off the griddle and undressed, but Tacos La Villa?s small salsa bar holds a variety of salsas as well as chopped onion and cilantro that you can add on your own. The kitchen also cooks the tortillas on the griddle for a few minutes, which removes more of that raw corn taste and imparts a welcome crispiness to them.
A few bites of the fatty cabeza (beef head) and beef barbacoa (barbecue) reveal deep, lingering flavors and fall-apart texture in both tacos. I particularly like these with just a fresh squirt of lime juice. The carne asada taco contains more char and depth of flavor than Alvarado?s version, and the spicy al pastor (marinated pork) satisfies even though the kitchen prepares it on the griddle as opposed to the customary vertical rotisserie introduced to Latin America by Middle Eastern immigrants.
The Taco L1000000 truck
Head west for about five or six miles and you will stumble on a taco truck, Taco L1000000. The ?meals-on-wheels? has been around for years, but as far as I know has never moved from this outpost. The truck dishes a small, cash-only menu of tacos ($1), quesadillas, tortas (sandwiches) and burritos from its cozy accommodations, which diners can enjoy in its attached shelter.
Just like the experience at Tacos La Villa, the savory cabeza and barbacoa tacos drip with juiciness, and the rich, spicy flavors of the carnitas taco meld with the sharp onion, herby cilantro and fresh juice from a wedge of lime. I do find the truck?s staff can be heavy-handed with the salsa, so ask them to leave it off and apply your own amount from the salsa bar inside the shelter.
