Soggy Seattle goes on streak of dry weather

(AP) ? Not too many people are complaining in typically-soggy Seattle, but the city is on a surprising run of dry weather.

The gauge at Sea-Tac Airport has gone to the end of August without a drop of rain. And the National Weather Service says if it stays that way through Friday as expected, it'll break the record of .01 inches of precipitation, which has happened just three times since 1891.

The current dry spell could challenge the 51-day record set in 1951. The last rain at the airport was .04 inches on July 22 ? marking 40 days and counting.

Records indicate it's a short-term trend, and there's no more reason for the dry August than there was for the wet June, said weather service meteorologist Allen Kam.

It's just the way things go, he said, "Streaks happen."

The arid stretch is just fine for people heading outdoors for Labor Day weekend. Clouds could lower temperatures and bring a chance of showers in some other areas of the state for the last holiday of the summer, but forecasters don't see any Seattle storms on the horizon.

"It has a decent chance of lasting a bunch into September," Kam said, who is based in Seattle. "We could certainly be sneaking up on the 51."

For the calendar year, precipitation in Seattle is about 5 inches above normal, Kam said.

Rain watchers follow the "water year," which starts Oct. 1. On that calendar, Seattle is just about 1 inch above the average for this time in the year, Kam said.

"That brings it whole heck of a lot closer to normal," he said.

Creating a Jubilee County: Prince George's Co., MD - Gambling ...

I was just informed that "in exchange for taking on the responsibility for purchasing slot machines, the casino owners will receive a 6% reduction on the 67% state casino tax."

Am I understanding this correctly?: A 6% reduction of 67% is quite a bit less than 10% and 10% of 67 is less than 7, so the tax will still be more than 60%? I really didn't realize the tax was that much. Couldn't we use that money? I wonder if the county can tax in addition to the state's tax.

I just spent a few days in Atlantic City and found it to be extremely busy for the middle of the week after school has already started. I spoke to several of the employees who seemed to love their jobs. They employ a lot of people, including a number of people in security positions - those we could see & those behind all those cameras. I've heard security could be a problem, but I saw no evidence of that there.

A friend of mine told me she went to Anne Arundel Mills' casino where it was crowded, so it looks like the market can bear more casinos. People apparently are looking for that kind of entertainment. We're in the "future-world" of more and more people spending money on entertainment. Can we stop that? Do we want to?

I don't like to gamble myself and I know some people have gambling addictions, but aren't a lot of our residents already spending their money gambling on the lottery, online gambling, and leaving the county to spend their money at other casinos? Is there any evidence that this will increase people's gambling habits or will it just shift them to this county with high tax revenues and more jobs?

I haven't decided how I'm going to vote on the issue, so let me know why you think we should or shouldn't vote for the casino referendum. If you have some facts to share, please let us know the source of your facts. (Comments are moderated to prevent spam, but I'll review them and approve all responses to these questions that don't have links in them that go to inappropriate sites.)

Japan to play France, Brazil in WCup tune-ups

Asian Cup holders Japan will take on football powerhouses France and Brazil in October, the Japan Football Association said Friday, providing valuable experience ahead of the 2014 World Cup.

The friendly against France will take place in Paris on October 12, and that against Brazil will be played in Wroclaw, Poland, on October 16.

"I'm glad to have a chance to play against strong teams like them," said Japan coach Alberto Zaccheroni. "It will be a good opportunity to help us improve further.

"Away games like this are good experience for those who are only used to playing at home and will help us to move onto a new stage, facing highly skilled players," the Italian added.

Japan have never beaten either team, registering one draw and four defeats against France and two draws and six defeats against Brazil.

China Vacation Part 2

Chengdu: The land of pandas and spicy food. As a big fan of spicy food, I really enjoyed the local cuisine (specifically the ma po tofu which was the best I?ve ever had). The city was also incredible because of the pandas. Pandas are my favorite animal and it was cool how close you could get to them at the Chengdu Panda Research Base. I am so used to seeing them at zoos in the states where there is maybe one or two just sitting in a corner. At the Panda Base, they had about 100 pandas that you could get pretty close to. I was lucky to arrive at the base in the morning while the pandas were still active. I donated ~1300 RMB for the conservation of pandas which gave me the opportunity to hold/cuddle with a panda cub as well as a few other things. The cub was named Ai Ling and was about 1 year old. Check out the pictures below!

Kunming: The last stop on our vacation. We visited the Longji Rice terraces which is a place that I have wanted to see for a long time. Even though we couldn?t go in the spring time when the terraces were flooded with water, they were still an incredible sight. We tried to wake up one morning to watch the sunrise over them but it was incredibly foggy. We also visited the stone forest and Dali.

On a side note, I would also like to describe some of the intimidating no-menu restaurants I encountered on my trip. The vegetables and meat (sometimes covered in flies) are laid out on tables or shelves and you pick which ones look decent and they will prepare them however you like. I was so thankful for fluent Chinese speakers while ordering because I probably would have died from food poisoning. I found a new love for a vegetable called Cong Jing Cai. We literally ordered it almost every day. We joked we were doing a Cong Jing Cai ?world tour? in tasting the different preparations throughout China. Overall this trip was incredible and I was lucky to be able to broaden the scope my study abroad experience far outside of Shanghai. Tomorrow I start a new chapter in my study abroad adventure. I?m pretty excited to meet new people and start my classes at Fudan (though I?m sure I?ll be praying for the weekend once they start).

Things I learned:

  • All of the many toll bridges and tourist sites we traveled through were staffed by young uniformed women. Interesting?
  • Even though I?m not the biggest fan of either, I really miss decent burgers and fresh milk. Both of which are rare in China.
  • Cross the street with the locals; they know what they?re doing.

Vehicle Problem Solving Secrets Is An Internet Site To Save You ...

Most of us encounter car trouble every so often. As soon as your car runs into trouble, you look to find out what is wrong and figure out where to get it fixed. There exists a system online that can help you with identifying your problems. The internet site that may help you with your car problems is ATS or Automotive Troubleshooting Secrets. The issue is sorted out by a real mechanic online rather than a robot or software application.: go here for more info.

The technician will talk about the symptoms with you and help you figure out the problem yourself. You are going to get useful feedback and illustrations that are simple to understand. The effectiveness of this program lies in the latest information on automotive repairs you get with a click of a button. Aided by the most up-to-date methods, you can easily solve the issue with your car. Any work performed on your car can be reviewed with ATS no matter what mechanic does the work.

Skilled professionals are there to help you solve your auto repair problems, with ATS?s massive database of actual garage fixes and automotive software. Once the fixes are examined, they get emailed to you.

The ideal method of fixing your car problem is going to be properly researched and evaluated. Making use of their repair database, they can include common fixes and wiring diagrams, with secret techniques for testing the parts which are suspected to be the problem. Many of the troubleshooters are actually retired engineers and mechanics who understand the various systems and can analyze the problems very well. Maybe you have a problem that may be more complex and difficult to repair so the technicians will guide you in using scanners found in top garages. ATS has confidence in their system by offering a lifetime membership having a one time payment, and a 90 day money back guarantee.

The usability of ATS is actually exactly why it works so well. You can find out things to tell your auto mechanic, saving them time so they will charge you less. You will be able to figure out what happens if your car was supposed to be repaired but the problem still exists. With problems like no-starts, stalling, and hesitations, you can get an analysis with illustrations and quick and practical solutions. You will comprehend how to fix small problems before they become serious problems. Until finally your problem is fixed, you will get unrestricted support, and any vehicle driver can use ATS, even garage owners and mechanics in car moving service.

You might not be able to fix the car yourself but at least with this information, you will know if your mechanic is being dishonest. With ATS, you will definitely save time and money and maybe headaches as well. Car problems are definitely an annoyance but at least you have an option to make the repairs less painful.

Israel to detain Sudanese illegals: minister

Israeli Interior Minister Eli Yishai warned on Wednesday that illegal immigrants from Sudan who do not leave the country by October 15 will be detained.

"Infiltrators from Sudan have until October 15 to leave Israel, after which date they will be placed in detention," Yishai said in a statement, adding that he had Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's approval to implement such a policy.

Yishai indicated that the detention would be followed by expulsion, without going into detail on the procedure that may be followed.

He said he had "chosen to act rather than talk, in order to preserve the Jewish and Zionist character of the state for our children."

Following a wave of arrests of illegal immigrants, Israel began expelling South Sudanese in June.

A court also gave the go-ahead for some 2,000 citizens of the Ivory Coast to be sent home.

More than 60,000 Africans are estimated to be living in Israel illegally, most of whom live in run-down neighbourhoods of south Tel Aviv.

Most are Sudanese and Eritreans who entered the country illegally via Egypt's Sinai Peninsula.

Rising tensions over the growing number of illegal immigrants exploded into violence in May when a protest in south Tel Aviv turned ugly, with demonstrators smashing African-run shops and property, chanting "Blacks out!"

As Apple continues to bully Android vendors, Sony shrugs

Typically, it's considered good news to lead an important race. In Missouri, it's a cause for anger and wild accusations. Rep. Todd Akin's explosive comments about rape and pregnancy have thrown a bizarre wrench in the Senate race, as partisans on both sides of the aisle claim that pollsters are artificially underestimating the other side's standing -- on purpose. Democratic-leaning pollster Public Policy Polling (PPP) went into the field Monday night -- roughly 24 hours after Akin's initial comments set off a firestorm. ...

Flight attendant's career landing in Guinness book

(AP) ? A flight attendant is landing in the Guinness World Records book after spending 63 years moving about the cabin.

Ron Akana, 83, worked his last route over the weekend on a United Airlines flight from Denver to Kauai, ending his career in the state where it began.

Hawaii, however, wasn't his final stop. His destination was retirement in Boulder, Colo., where he has been living since 2002 to be closer to his grandchildren. He spent his first few days of retirement writing thank-you notes to well-wishers.

"I wasn't expecting this much attention," he said Tuesday.

Akana joined the airline while a student at the University of Hawaii in 1949, when friends spotted a newspaper ad. "We didn't even know what a flight steward was," he recalled. "But it meant getting to the mainland, which was a huge deal in those days.

"It seemed pretty exciting and it proved to be more than that," he said.

And so he became one of United's first male flight attendants. "We just liked working with girls," he said.

The Korean War took him away from his job for two years when he was drafted in 1951. Akana said his most memorable moments included meeting the cast of the 1953 movie "From Here to Eternity," ? mentioning Frank Sinatra and Deborah Kerr by name ? and going from propeller planes to jets, which cut travel time in half.

Over the years, he's seen it all. Passengers would dress up, not down. Think suits, not flip-flops. Smoking was no big deal, not a federal offense.

Over time, though, things changed. The meal service became better. No more smoke. In-flight movies, which he said started to be shown seven or eight years after he began his career. And, of course, tight security after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Guinness World Records came calling a few months ago and later sent him a plaque recognizing him as the longest-serving flight attendant. He's been told he'll appear in the record book in October.

To get a sense of how long he's been in the air, consider that if his 200 million miles counted toward United's frequent flyer program, he could treat the entire town of Big Rock, Ill., population 1,138, to a first class trip from Chicago to Honolulu and back ? then once a month for the next 12 years, he'd still have enough miles to travel with his wife, Elizabeth, anywhere they want in the continental U.S.

Akana decided to retire after he was offered a buyout. But he admits being tempted to hang on for the arrival of the next super jet, the Boeing 787. "I shall have to watch from the sidelines," he said.

While he's now retired, Akana is not done flying. From now on, his wife will be joining him.

"I got terrific travel privileges," he said, adding: "There's a lot to be seen."

Citigroup agrees to pay $590M in shareholder suit

(AP) ? Citigroup is offering to pay $590 million to legal claims by shareholders that its executives dissembled about the bank's growing problems before the financial crisis.

The bank said Wednesday that it agreed to the deal to eliminate the cost and uncertainties associated with litigating the class-action suit. It denied the allegations.

The plaintiffs say Citigroup executives kept mum between February 2007 and April 2008 about huge losses the bank faced on complex mortgage investments. When the problem was disclosed, they say, Citigroup's share price plunged. They blame the bank for their losses.

The New York Bank says it already has set aside enough money to cover the cost of the settlement.

The settlement is subject to court approval. The case is pending in federal court in Manhattan.

Isaac triggers more evacuations after soaking New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS (Reuters) - Hurricane Isaac forced evacuations affecting tens of thousands of people in Louisiana and Mississippi on Thursday, even as relieved New Orleans residents said its destruction was nothing like that seen after Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

A slow-moving Category 1 hurricane when it hit the region on Tuesday, Isaac was expected to weaken into a tropical depression on Thursday. Only one fatality linked to the cyclone has been confirmed so far.

But Isaac left a soggy mess across a widespread area along the U.S. Gulf Coast and could still bring heavy rain and flooding as it moves over the central United States - where rain is badly needed - in the next few days.

More than 1 million residents of Louisiana and Mississippi were without power due to the storm on Thursday morning, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.

Fears about a possible imminent failure of the Lake Tangipahoa Dam in Mississippi prompted authorities to order the immediate evacuation of 60,000 residents in nearby communities in both Louisiana and thousands of others in Mississippi.

The dam, in Pike County, Mississippi, is about 100 miles north of New Orleans, which was not in imminent danger.

"It was badly damaged during the torrential rains last night but it has not been breached at this time," said Carlene Statham, deputy director of Pike County Civil Defense.

The oil and gas industry in the Gulf of Mexico region has so far reported no major storm-related damage to infrastructure. Energy production was expected to start ramping up again, after nearly grinding to a halt as Isaac closed in on Louisiana on Tuesday.

Benchmark Brent crude was little changed in Thursday afternoon trading at about $112.80 a barrel.

Multibillion-dollar defenses built to protect New Orleans itself, after it was ravaged by Katrina almost exactly seven years ago, passed their first major test, according to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

PLAQUEMINES PARISH FLOODED

But massive rains and storm surge from the Gulf of Mexico inundated low-lying communities outside the federal flood containment system protecting the city, forcing the evacuation of thousands of people from their homes and dramatic rooftop rescue operations.

The hardest-hit area was Plaquemines Parish, southeast of New Orleans, where floodwaters overtopped at least one levee on Wednesday and left many homes under about 12 feet of water.

Local boatmen plucked dozens in Plaquemines from the roofs of their houses after they had decided they could ride out what, compared with Katrina, seemed like a small storm.

Parish President Billy Nungesser said U.S. Army National Guard troops and local sheriff's office officials were going house to house through the area on Thursday to ensure that there were no deaths or injuries.

Clearing weather permitted the use of military helicopters, mostly UH-60 Blackhawks, to aid in the operation.

In St. John the Baptist Parish, northwest of the city, about 3,000 people were forced to evacuate their homes before dawn on Thursday due to storm surges from Lake Pontchartrain and Lake Maurepas, authorities said.

In Slidell, a town of about 27,000 people northeast of New Orleans, storm surge from Lake Pontchartrain left the Eden Isle community under about a foot of water.

Emergency services rescued about 350 people from Slidell homes and neighboring communities hit by more severe flooding, local authorities said.

"We've had no power and no food for two days," said Steve Bales, 45, a Slidell-based construction worker.

"We don't have a way out of town. We have nowhere to go," he added, sitting on the stoop of a city building with half a dozen townspeople.

National Guard troops and police moved into the town Thursday afternoon as some local residents plowed along flooded streets in boats.

Staff Sergeant Denis Ricou, a Louisiana National Guard spokesman, said about 5,800 troops had been deployed due to Isaac and the number could rise to over 8,000 in the coming days.

City officials announced a dusk-to-dawn curfew on Wednesday to help prevent any return of the looting that occurred in New Orleans in the days after Katrina struck in 2005.

New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu warned that the punishment for a looting conviction is harsh - a mandatory three years' hard labor.

"If you loot, you'll wear an orange suit," Landrieu told a news conference.

About a dozen looting-related arrests were reported in the city by Thursday morning but the streets were unusually quiet, littered with downed branches, trees and pieces of roofing material.

Power remained out through most of the city, while in the historic French Quarter, a few people were out taking down the boards they had nailed up over store windows.

Mark Wallace, 52, came out to check on his store, Fancy Boutique.

"This one just took forever," Wallace said of the slow-moving storm, which has brought rain to New Orleans since late Tuesday. "Usually they blow through and are done with."

Wayne Overton, 50, a longshoreman, came out to inspect a large, fallen tree in front of his home that had knocked down power lines. "This one lasted a while. It was scary," Overton said, noting that the storm had damaged the roof of his home, near the city's port. "There's going to be a lot of clean-up to do around here."

DROUGHT RELIEF

As the focus on Isaac shifted from the coast, many in its projected path further north have been praying it will bring rain desperately needed to ease a drought in the central states, where summer crops are drying up and many rivers and dams are critically low.

Isaac never came close to the power of Katrina, which was a Category 3 hurricane on the five-step Saffir-Simpson scale when it smashed into New Orleans on August 29, 2005.

But U.S. President Barack Obama still declared the impact on Louisiana and Mississippi major disasters and ordered federal aid to supplement state and local recovery efforts.

City officials said Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport, which closed late on Monday, would remain shut on Thursday until repairs can be done to the damaged lines that supply it with power.

A tow-truck driver, 62-year-old Gregory Alan Parker, died early Thursday after a tree fell on his cab while he was trying to move a large tree from a main street in Picayune, a town in Pearl River County in southern Mississippi near the Louisiana border, according a spokesperson for the Pearl River Emergency Management Agency.

Together with an unconfirmed death in a Louisiana apartment fire, his was the only U.S. fatality blamed on Isaac so far. The storm killed 23 people in Haiti and the Dominican Republic on its way across the Caribbean to the Gulf of Mexico.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center said Isaac, now a tropical storm with top sustained winds of 40 mph, was centered about 165 miles northwest of New Orleans and churning slowly northwest.

It was followed by Hurricane Kirk, which formed on Thursday over the open Atlantic Ocean, about 1,065 miles northeast of the Caribbean northern Leeward Islands, the Miami-based hurricane center said.

Samsung introduces ATIV Tab: a 10.1-inch Windows RT tablet

Samsung introduces ATIV Tab a 101inch Windows RT tablet

Samsung's busy cranking out its fall lineup here in Berlin, and among the new entries is the ATIV Tab, a Windows RT-packing cousin of the Galaxy Note 10.1. The new 10.1-inch slate isn't quite as aggressive as its Android counterpart and centers on a 1,366 x 768 display, a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, a 5MP rear camera paired with a 1.9MP front-facing cam, and ports for micro-HDMI as well as USB. Dimensionally, the tablet is as light and skinny as you'd hope: it weighs 20.1 ounces (570g) and measures a slim 8.9mm thick. The 32GB and 64GB storage options aren't shockers given the extra space Windows and the bundled copy of Office 2013 Home and Student 2013 will demand, but there's a treat for long-haul users in the battery -- it's been upgraded from the 7,000maH pack of the Note 10.1 to an ample 8,200mAh unit. Samsung hasn't handed out launch details, but it's safe to say that the ATIV Tab won't arrive any sooner than October 26th.

HBT: Clemens has no plans to pitch again, right now

The Houston Chronicle caught up with Roger Clemens at a golf tournament in South Carolina and asked him if, in the wake of his triumphant independent league game on Saturday, he plans to pitch again any time soon:

?Not at this point ? That could change in a couple days, but right now we haven?t talked to any of the guys or anything like that.?

And you know that he?s telling the truth about that because he has never ever been convicting of lying. You can look it up.

I?d be willing to bet a great deal that he makes an appearance for the Astros in the series against the Cubs next month.

California lawmakers vote to ban gay "conversion" therapy for minors

SACRAMENTO, California (Reuters) - California's state Assembly approved a bill on Tuesday to prohibit children and teenagers from undergoing a controversial therapy that aims to reverse homosexuality, moving the state closer to becoming the first to impose such a ban.

The 51-21 vote in the Democratic-controlled Assembly marked a major victory for gay rights advocates who say the so-called conversion therapy has no medical basis because homosexuality is not a disorder.

Opponents of the practice say such attempts to change sexual orientation can cause depression and lead to substance abuse and suicide.

Several openly gay legislators championed the bill in emotional speeches during the floor debate, citing their own childhood experiences.

"One of our No. 1 priorities in this house is to protect the next generation of Californians," said Ricardo Lara, a Democrat from Los Angeles County. "And some of those are sissy boys. And some of those sissy boys grow up to be Assembly members. And some of those sissy boys need help. And we are here to stand with those sissy boys."

The Senate passed its version of the bill by a vote of 23-13 in May. Lawmakers must iron out minor differences in the two measures by Friday before a final bill makes its way to the desk of Democratic Governor Jerry Brown.

Brown has not indicated whether he supports the measure, and a spokesman for the governor said that he would not comment on pending legislation.

Assembly member John Perez, the first openly gay speaker of the California's lower house, said during floor debate that "it is inappropriate for anyone, including parents, to subject anybody to dehumanizing activity," referring to the therapy.

The bill's sponsor, state Senator Ted Lieu, said in a statement that the psychiatrist who pioneered such therapy, Dr. Robert Spitzer, has since renounced it and apologized to the gay and lesbian community.

If Brown signs the bill into law, California would become the first state in the nation to outlaw such therapy for minors.

Republican opponents of the measure said politicians should not step in and regulate what they consider to be a matter for medical boards to decide. They also said the bill encroaches on the rights of parents to make choices for their children.

"That's why parents have children -- to hand down their legacies, their belief systems, the way they want their children raised," Assembly member Shannon Grove, a Republican from Bakersfield, said during the floor debate.

'Nano machine shop' shapes nanowires, ultrathin films

ScienceDaily (Aug. 29, 2012) ? A new "nano machine shop" that shapes nanowires and ultrathin films could represent a future manufacturing method for tiny structures with potentially revolutionary properties.

The structures might be tuned for applications ranging from high-speed electronics to solar cells and also may have greater strength and unusual traits such as ultrahigh magnetism and "plasmonic resonance," which could lead to improved optics, computers and electronics.

The researchers used their technique to stamp nano- and microgears; form tiny circular shapes out of a material called graphene, an ultrathin sheet of carbon that holds promise for advanced technologies; and change the shape of silver nanowires, said Gary Cheng, an associate professor of industrial engineering at Purdue University.

"We do this shaping at room temperature and atmospheric pressure, like a nano-machine shop," said Cheng, who is working with doctoral students Ji Li, Yiliang Liao, Ting-Fung Chung and Sergey Suslov and physics professor Yong P. Chen.

Graphene and nanowires -- filaments 1,000 times thinner than a human hair -- have numerous potential applications. However, technologies are needed to tailor them for specific uses. The new method, called laser shock-induced shaping, makes it possible to tune nanowires by altering electrical and optoelectrical properties that are critical for electronic components.

The researchers also have shown how laser shock-induced shaping can be used to change the properties of graphene, a step toward harnessing the material for electronic applications.

Findings were detailed in research papers published in the journal Nano Letters, and the work also was highlighted earlier this month in the News and Views section of the journal Nature Photonics.

The technique works by using a multilayered sandwich structure that has a tiny mold at the bottom. Nanowires were situated directly above the mold, and other materials were layered between the nanowires and a glass cover sheet. Exposing this layered "forming unit" to an ultra-fast pulsing laser causes one of the layers to burn up, generating a downward pressure that forces the nanowires into the mold and changes their shape.

"The process could be scaled up for an industrial roll-to-roll manufacturing process by changing laser beam size and scanning speed," Cheng said. "The laser shock-induced shaping approach is fast and low-cost."

Part of the research, funded by the National Science Foundation, was carried out in a specialized clean room at the Birck Nanotechnology Center in Purdue's Discovery Park.

Rice says US standing in the world is at risk

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice says raising U.S. standing in the world depends on solving problems at home, and that Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney is the man to accomplish that task.

Rice, in her prepared speech to the Republican National Convention, does not mention President Barack Obama by name. But she says the America's position as the most successful political and economic experiment in history is in danger today.

She speaks of the crisis in education and asks for immigration laws that protect the country's borders while meeting economic needs.

She says there is a sense that America has for too long carried the burdens of supporting free people and free markets, but that if the United States does not lead no one will lead, fostering chaos.

Tips on Long Distance Relationships ? Zoosklog ? The Romantic ...

August 29, 2012 at 3:20 pm Juliette T.

by Huw Richardson

Near and far are concepts the heart seems to ignore. Literature and history are filled with long-distance relationships: the letters of Abelard and Heloise and the letters of John and Abigail Adams contain deep wisdom and love, and also humor and candid pain. What is the Anthony/Cleopatra/Caesar triad if not a long-distance relationship gone horribly bad? What else is Ulysses? marriage to Penelope? Fiddler on the Roof has one of the daughters falling in love with her tutor, despite his exile to Siberia. The Internet has provided new meaning to ?Long Distance Relationship? both in the the sense of definition (what do we mean by ?Relationship??) and in the sense of tools and content (what makes a relationship work). We can video chat, text and sext to our hearts? content now. What would Cleopatra have made of Facebook? Would Perchik have tweeted his love to Hodel?

Presenting yourself online in an emotionally available way can result in that flush of new love that we are all looking for. But what happens when your Mister or Miss Awesome is far away? What can we learn about long-distance relationships to make the time-space factor easier to deal with? Is there anything that such a relationship can teach those of us not willing to take such a risk?

By way of presenting my bone fides, my last two relationships have been long distance. For two and a half years while living in San Francisco I dated a man from Seattle. Later, for more than three years, I dated a man from Hamilton, Ontario. For the first year I was in North Carolina, but I moved to Buffalo, NY, in order to be closer. Of course, even though we were less than one hour apart by car, there was an international border to cross any time we wanted to cuddle!

After six years of doing this, I?d be willing to do it again (although I don?t need to, thankfully!) because of the things I?ve learned by going through the process. These same points are valuable for ?local? relationships as well as Long Distance Relationships (LDRs)

1) Communication! Communication! Communication!
Humans are remarkable animals: our physical and mental structure is patterned in such a way that we can communicate beyond mere words via posture, tone, and even pheromones and other body functions. Communication in long distance is largely relegated to text-only, and so it is important that all parties in a LDR verbally communicate as much as possible all the things that are usually contained in subtext. Since your location is divided, your communication must be extreme.

The most important thing that I?ve learned as a writer: humor, especially sarcasm and irony, fail miserably on-line. Attempting to communicate in a ?sassy? way will blow up in your face. Trying to ironically understate the importance of something will result in your partner thinking it?s not important. Words online have to be 100% literal. Unless you?re an amazing writer of romance, please: Don?t do it. Full Stop.

The second most important thing I?ve learned is: everything is important. During the first relationship, the SF-STL one, we flew back and forth each month, taking turns. Sometimes we managed to see each other for two weekends in the same month! We saw each other so often that we forgot to communicate in the day-to-day. Things that needed to be said were always held off until the next time we saw each other. The result was emotional time bombs that usually exploded moments after one or the other of us stepped out of the Alaska Air terminal, most often on the drive home.

Remember to say things when they are important to be said even in text. Don?t store up all that emotional energy for the next time you see each other.

2) Virtualize! Virtualize! Virtualize!
This builds on the last item and leads to the next. There are some times when you and your new love can not be together. But there is no reason not to try! Communication on the internet has been busted wide open by the use of smartphones and mobile technology. When I started dating the man in Seattle, about the only thing you could do on the net was IRC Chat (which is where we met). Now there?s video chat and unlimited data/calling plans to keep you in touch. The New York Times Magazine calls this ?Ambient Intimacy?. Regular relationships have this build in by physical proximity. Those of us in LDRs need to make our own with tech.

Zoosk lets you communicate with each other via text or video chat. This makes chatting easier and can enhance your intimacy during those times that you are apart from each other.

When I was dating the Canadian he got a phone number from Google Voice that was local to me in North Carolina. The service was (and is) free and it forwarded to his Canadian Cell phone and let me talk to him whenever I wanted. His own calling plan let him call the States so we were never fall apart. My Google Voice account now allows me text him directly from my computer for free!

Skype facilitates international calling at discount rates, but also allows for video chat. One friend of mine calls the Family in Poland (for free!) as often as she can to show live pictures of her child growing up. I used to use the service for ?geek dates?: we?d send each other YouTube links and watch videos together as we surfed the net from our desks.

3) Bilocation! Bilocation! Bilocation!

Unless there has been a clear and open agreement, you?re not setting up shop in one place. You have to set up shop in two places for this relationship to work.

Hamilton, Ontario, became my second home. More people in Hamilton knew who I was than in Buffalo! I would walk up James Street North, for the monthly Art Crawl and be waived at from shop windows, get hugs on the street, etc. My partner worked just as hard to know people in Buffalo, although with less success ? mostly because of Population Density in the American Rust Belt, but also because people in Hamilton are so durned friendly!

Using Zoosk?s Romantic Social Network you can build a profile for the two of you that you share with your friends in both locations. You can post pictures, share comments about eateries in either location, and let the friends in one place know about what happened last weekend when you were out of town. And, of course, you can share your personal events with your friends in both places. If you link it up with Facebook and Twitter, even when you go on vacation you can make posts that all your circles can share.

You need to move easily between two worlds. The stereotyped image is ?I have a drawer in my partner?s bedroom.? But the reality you need two lives: it?s a huge pain to only have a change of clothes for a long weekend ? better to have several in the house! Shoes need to live in two places. We constantly read each others local news or local blogs. I knew I?d ?Made It? in Hamilton when I heard my name on a Canadian podcast!

In a ?regular? relationship this has obvious analogues: your circles of friend may never integrate; they may never even meet until your engagement party. But you and your partner need to move easily in both worlds and in the third world that you are creating together.

4. For the rest of you?

Clearly LDRs are special cases, but they underscore the weakness and strengths of ?regular? relationships too. Communication is the key in all cases. A friend of mine, a clergy person, told a couple, ?You never have to lie to each other, ever.? This holds true in LDRs and in other types of relationships. There?s a desire to only put your best foot forward, but the reality is that all the rest of you is going to show up sooner or later ? and all the rest of your intended as well! Don?t use your online time to hide that as it will only break you up in the end.

And here?s the last thing I learned: both of my Long-Distance Relationships ended because of a change in my life that I failed to communicate successfully. In both cases, I downplayed the change, I even covered it over a little. But ultimately I had to be honest and it was that that caused the breakup to happen.

When you are not living in close proximity with the person you are dating (or, sometimes, when you are) it is possible to hide the parts of your life that might make the other party uncomfortable. These can be small parts (pets, family) or huge (religion, health, eating habits, etc). When you meet the prospective love of your life online, you need to bring your entire self to the table, online already creates a filter, don?t hinder the process by holding back anything that may be important to the relationship.

Answering Questions About Babysitters | Parenting - Step by Step

This article is posted under Parenting

Most people have a lot of questions about babysitters. Here are a few of the most common ones:

What?s The Going Rate?

The national average for a high school sitter is $10 an hour. For an older sitter, expect to pay more. Here are some other factors that will affect this rate:

  • Experience: Sitters who begin working at a young age will acquire experience at a fast rate. Normally, more experience means having to pay more money.
  • Age: As a babysitter?s age increases, so will the amount of experience that they possess. These sitters may know first aid and be able to drive, so the rate will be higher.
  • Number of Children: When a family has more than one child, the rate should be lifted by at least a dollar or two an hour.
  • Kind of Job: Overnight jobs will also require paying more. Holidays like New Year?s Eve or Valentines Day should receive at least $3 more an hour as well.

Keeping A Babysitter Satisfied

Good sitters are hard to come by, so after finding one that fits your family, here are some of the things you can do to keep her happy:

  • Food: Tell a babysitter that she can eat any food in the house at mealtime or for snacks. It may be a nice touch to pick up her favorite flavor of ice cream or other snack before she arrives so that it?s on hand.
  • Transportation: Transportation can be a headache for some sitters. Without access to an automobile, it may be nice to pick her up and take her home. If she has to drive far to get to your house, it?s wise to include extra gas money.
  • Keep Track of Time: Parents should return home at the time they tell the sitter and always call if they will be late.
  • Generosity: Giving a bonus over the holidays and remembering her birthday is important. After working for a set amount of time, it may be appropriate to give her a small raise.

Should A Family Member Be A Babysitter?

There are both pros and cons to using a family member as a babysitter:

Pros

  • Trust: Family members are already trusted, so you won?t have worries when you?re away.
  • Low to No Cost: Many relatives will not accept money to babysit, but it may be nice to hand some over anyway. Another option is to give them something like a gift certificate to their favorite restaurant as a token of your appreciation.
  • Bonding Time: When a relative has time with your children, they can get closer and learn more about each other.

Cons

  • Less Control: A family member may forget that the parent is the boss.
  • Low Energy: An older relative may not have the same energy as a young teenage sitter
  • Generation Gap: A relative from an older generation may have different parenting styles that don?t mesh with current ideals.
