David Hussey desperate for a Test opportunity ? Cricket News Update

In the wake of his elder brother?s decision to step aside from international cricket at end of the ongoing Test summer, David Hussey has added his say on the vacant Australian middle-order spot, hoping to get a opportunity to prove his own mettle in the longer version.

"I desperately want to play Test cricket and I haven't had the opportunity," Hussey told reporters on Monday."I don't think I'd be able to replace Mike as a player (but) I think it'd be a privilege to play Test cricket in his position. If that happens it would be fantastic. "

Michael Hussey?s announcement remained a surprise to all cricketing observers, giving the left-hander?s imperious form of late. However, the demanding nature of the sport had taken its toll on the player and forced him to consider his future with the national team. The left-hander had to wait for a considerable while before being handed a debut at the age of 30, in 2004, but seemingly will bout out on his own terms, and arguably at the peak of his powers.

The conclusion of the traditional Sydney Test will again force Cricket Australia to pick a candidate to replace Hussey, having already elevated Phillip Hughes to the Test side following Ricky Ponting?s decision to hang his boots.

Usman Khawaja had been earmarked as the leading candidate for the role after being called up to the Test setup as cover for Michael Clarke. The skipper suffered a hamstring injury at Hobart, and remains a doubt for the upcoming Test against the touring Sri Lankans.

However, with Australia looking to deal with the loss of their two most experienced players, Clarke opened the door for some of the ageing players to stake their claims on the available spot.

David, who has been racking up runs in various domestic circuits over the past decade, said that he was eager to grab his chance, and accompany his teammates on the upcoming tours of India and England. The 35-year-old has played 64 ODIs and 39 T20Is for his country but has yet to earn a Test call-up.

"I guess my advantage is I've played for a long time. I know my game pretty well. I've made a lot of first-class runs."Allegedly I'm a very good player of spin, so I'd love to prove myself against the Indians. "

Ummm, woah.. Why do you have so many characters? O.O Anyway, im really sorry to say so what with you being the GM and all, but i think your characters are overpowered.

Sasha: She controls weather, "each and every element", can fly, martial arts, marksmanship...

Romeo: "With greater effort" he can make someone human "for eternity". Skilled in necromancy, hexes, emotion manipulator, enhanced physically, lunakinesis, the list goes on...

Drago: Necromancy, blood manipulation, immortality O.O And of course, healer.

DeAngelo: Able to generate illusions that can "last forever", a version of invisibility, dream manipulation, mind weaving....

Well yeah :/

EDIT: With that being said, it would be rather difficult to find unique and different powers for the newer characters. And each power should come with a limit (the distance it can be used, side-effects, how long it lasts, etc). There should be certain boundaries set like the amount of powers per character.. Yeahh, you get what I mean.

As mentioned before, the RolePlay is a carry-on from a previous one. Everyone had multiple characters and started dropping like flies.

Sasha: She's Mother Nature. She flies via wind lift. Martial Arts and Marksmanship - A girl gets bored after the first eighty years.
Romeo: -Magick binding, Necromancy, Hexes, Curses, Fear Manipulation. All Dark Magick. You know. The class that he teaches...? He can't teach his Circe wards how to use the Dark Magick they have adeptness for if he only knows some by theory. Romeo, while one of if not the most powerful character in the RolePlay, does not actively use his powers and hardly ever does. He will show the students how to do something and then expect them to take care of themselves.

All of the Professors are generally OP. People who are centuries old tend to learn as they go on and practice. So, yeah. They end up pretty strong.

Drago: Necromancy is something that the Circe wards learn from Romeo. Its black magick. Which he teaches. He's not immortal, but as you can see, the CS is in first person and as far as he knows or thinks, he is immortal simply because since the accident, he hasn't aged past what he appears now. And he can only heal that which he inflicts. He can't just walk into St. Jude's and cure all the kids there. So if he didn't put it on you, you're SoL.

DeAngelo: His powers are all mind-based.

The issue (as I perceive) with most GMs is that they freak out when characters seem to be all powerful, but I don't. I look at the past of that particular player and then trust them to handle that power wisely. I don't mind OP characters so long as the player knows that they can't go around like a T-Rex destroying everything in their path just because they can. There's always super powerful characters in novels, so why should it be different in RolePlays? I'm not afraid to cut the ropes on a character that starts to get out of hand. Of course, there will be a warning given beforehand. But I trust that if a player makes a particularly powerful character, they will use it wisely to ensure that the story goes exceptionally well.

Don't worry, I'm not going to be all "I'm Co-GM(BleedingLover is the GM ^^)! I do what I want! I GodMod coz I can! Raaaawr!" I RolePlay responsibly. Should you choose not to take my word for it, so be it. The RolePlay is how the RolePlay is.

For the powers that are a bit autohittish, I always acquire the consent of the corresponding player before doing anything. I.E. DeAngelo isn't going to read Phoenix's mind unless I acquire permission first.

RolePlaying is a game of trust. Trust that your fellow authors will work together with yourself and each other to provide optimum story results until the story has reached its end.

@Littlefox Haha alright then, Il let that slide if you put it that way. By the way let me double check. Romeo, Sasha, Drago and DeAngelo are all the Professors right? Got a little confused there. Would be nice if you put a little marker or a Professor list in the roleplay info.

Official: Turkey talking to jailed Kurdish leader

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) ? Turkey is holding talks with the Kurdish rebels' jailed leader to press the autonomy-seeking guerrilla group to relinquish arms and end its decades-long conflict, a senior official was quoted as saying on Sunday.

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's chief adviser, Yalcin Akdogan, insisted in an interview with Taraf newspaper that the discussions were aimed at convincing the Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, to lay down its arms for good. He said Turkey was not seeking any kind of a temporary truce, similar to those the PKK has declared in the past and which critics say allow the group to recoup before resuming attacks on Turkish military targets.

"The basic aim of the meetings is not a temporary ceasefire but to push the organization to put down its arms," Taraf quoted Akdogan as saying.

Akdogan's comments came days after Erdogan also said Turkey's intelligence agency has resumed discussions with rebel leader Abdullah Ocalan, who is serving a life term on a prison island off Istanbul. "As long as we see a light we'll continue to talk. If there is no light, we'll stop there," Erdogan said, without providing details on the discussions.

Turkey ? which has been torn between a desire for reconciliation with Kurds and its stated aim of battling a group it regards as terrorists ? has admitted holding secret discussions with Ocalan and other PKK members in recent years. Officials have said those talks failed.

The conflict has claimed tens of thousands of lives since the rebels ? who are seeking self-rule for Kurds in southeast Turkey ? took up arms in 1984. Turkey's Western allies also label the group a terrorist organization. The Kurdish minority comprises more than 20 percent of Turkey's 75 million people.

The resumption of talks with Ocalan comes amid a surge in violence this year which has killed hundreds of PKK rebels, Turkish security force members and civilians.

Ocalan, imprisoned since 1999, is believed to still hold sway over the PKK. Last month, at Ocalan's request, hundreds of Kurdish prisoners ended a hunger strike they had started to demand more rights for Kurds and improved jail conditions.

Erdogan's government has granted unprecedented rights to Kurds since coming to power in 2002, including opening a Kurdish-language television station and allowing optional Kurdish language courses in schools. But prospects of a solution appear remote due to Turkish public opposition to granting greater concessions, including political autonomy, to the Kurds.

The recent increase in violence follows the arrests of thousands of Kurdish activists, including elected mayors and journalists, who are accused of membership in an umbrella organization prosecutors say is linked to the PKK. Many Kurds also are angered that no one has been held to account for military air strikes last year that killed 34 Kurdish civilians, many of them youngsters, who were mistaken for PKK fighters.

Experts: New shale fields to help stabilise global oil prices

Oil prices are expected to be fluctuate less in 2013, remaining on a par with or even softening slightly from 2012 levels, say energy experts.

Suthep Liumsirijarern, director-general of the Energy Policy and Planning Office, said North America's new oil shale field will come on stream next year with production of about 500,000 barrels of oil equivalent, causing crude oil imports to the US to drop.

Globally, oil demand will go up slightly from 89 million barrels per day this year to 90 million bpd.

Meanwhile, the economic crisis in Europe and the US economy will not fully recover, resulting in easing oil prices in 2013, he said.

Dubai crude is targeted to trade in a range of US$108-113 a barrel compared with an average of $109.50 this year.

In Thailand, the government's first-time car buyer scheme will drive up petrol demand by 4.9% next year to an average of 21.7 million litres a day from 20 million this year.

Diesel demand will grow by 2.6% to 57.7 million litres a day, while electricity consumption will increase by 6.13% from 161 billion megawatt-hours this year.

"We must prepare for energy-price restructuring after it has been delayed for a long time, involving liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and compressed natural gas (CNG)," said Mr Suthep.

LPG and CNG prices have been subsidised by the state-owned Oil Fund since 2008, costing about 200 billion baht to date.

Anon Sirisaengtaksin, the chief executive of PTT Global Chemicals Plc, said the petrochemicals industry is unlikely to bottom out next year like analysts estimated since the global economy has remained slow.

Petrochemical demand will come mainly from Asia, where economies remain largely sound, according to Mr Anon.

"We have to wait until the US and European economies bounce back. Then signs [of petrochemical prices] bottoming out will emerge," he said.

Phichai Tinsuntisuk, head of the alternative energy industry club of the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI), said ethanol demand will grow by more than 50% from 1.2 million litres a day this year to 2 million litres a day in 2013.

Major automotive manufacturers have launched vehicles that are compatible with E85 and E20.

Meanwhile, the FTI has called on the government to proceed cautiously with the One Tambon One Power Plant scheme to ensure the success of the plan.

Under the programme, the government will introduce biomass projects for communities in remote areas by offering grants, investment privileges and project financing.

"The government should come up with good planing of this project, as local communities lack the expertise to operate power plants," said Mr Phichai.

5 more reasons to stop smoking that you can't ignore

Each year Americans make resolutions to change their lifestyle in ways that can make them happier and healthier. Weight loss and smoking cessation are among the top New Year's resolutions. There are more reasons to avoid tobacco than you might be aware of; found from 2012 studies.

Lower risk of sudden cardiac death
A study published December, 2012 shows tobacco, even in moderation, is deadlier for women than men. Even light smokers who are otherwise healthy are at higher risk for sudden cardiac death.

Researchers have known smoking boosts the risk of heart disease, but only recently discovered that even one cigarette a day can double the chances of sudden cardiac death, compared to non-smoking women.

For every 8 years of smoking, the risk a woman might die from sudden cardiac death increased by 8 percent, according to the findings.

Decreased pain
Another study published December, 2012 showed people with back pain experienced improvement in chronic back pain.

More than 5300 patients with a spinal disorder were included in the study. The participants were treated with and without surgery during an eight month period.

The results showed patients who continued to smoke experienced no improvement in pain. Those who quit or had never smoked had 'significantly' less back pain.

Ten more years of life
A study that included 1 million women that was published in the Lancet, October, 2012, showed eliminating tobacco can add 10 years to your life.

At the start of the investigation, 20% of participants were smokers, 28% were ex-smokers and 52% had never smoked.

The study found greater benefits from stopping smoking at a younger age. The study authors said the benefits of stopping smoking were greater than previously known.

The benefits of tobacco cessation after age 40 were ten times bigger than known. If you stop before age 40 you?re likely to add ten more years to your life.

Lower risk of cataracts
An October, 2012 study revealed smokers have higher risk of developing cataracts that occur with aging and are a leading cause of blindness and difficulty with vision in the world.

Cataract surgery is an option, but comes with risks that can lead to permanent visual impairment. The cost of surgery is high, though most insurance companies cover a portion.

The finding came from a review of hospital cases and showed that everyone who smoked cigarettes had a higher risk of developing cataracts, though the reasons were unclear.

You might help save a life
In 2012 researchers discovered why passive smoking is so harmful.

For their study, researchers enrolled 55 healthy volunteers with an average age of 26. Exposure to passive smoke increased the affinity of the blood to clot, which can lead to heart attack and stroke, after just one hour.

The researchers suggested prolonged exposure to passive smoke could have an even more profound effect on increasing the risk of blood clots than seen in the study.

Other reasons for quitting smoking that are commonly known include lower risk of respiratory and cardiovascular disease, better financial health given the cost of tobacco, brighter teeth, a clear glowing complexion and more.

If you?re thinking of quitting smoking in the New Year, speak with your doctor for help. Prescription medications work for some people. If you?re looking for tips to stop smoking, read our top 25 suggestions.

Plenty of people in community who deserve nomination

Topics:? australia day, mackay regional council

There’s more to Australia Day than sporting the national colours. It’s also about recognising the outstanding achievers in our community by nominating them for awards.
There?s more to Australia Day than sporting the national colours. It?s also about recognising the outstanding achievers in our community by nominating them for awards. Peter Holt

IF YOU know someone who deserves recognition for the good deeds they do, you need to do a good deed first and nominate them.

There's only about a week to go before Mackay Regional Council Australia Day award nominations close and in some categories the lack of entries is a real concern, according to corporate communications manager Ken Furdek.

"We often see a noticeable increase in nominations in the first week of the new year, and we're hoping that will be the case this year, but submissions for the two new categories are really concerning," Mr Furdek said.

"These are the South Sea Islander Achievement Award, which is a one-off for 2013 because it marks their 150 years of settlement, and the Environmental Achievement Award.

"The other area where we notoriously struggle for nominations is Sarina, and this happens every year.

"There are a lot of people in Sarina who do a lot of good things, and we need these worthy people to be nominated." Mr Furdek said people may have misconceptions about the type of people who could be nominated for an award.

"This is for people who do something for their community, people who do good deeds, and that can be mowing a neighbour's lawn every week.

"They don't need to be outstanding achievers," Mr Furdek said.

The 2012 Young Citizen of the Year, Cale Hutchins, also is encouraging people to put in nominations.

"Come hell or high water the people of Mackay always chip in," Mr Hutchins said.

"We have some real community heroes and fantastic volunteers out there that deserve recognition, even though they don't do these things for rewards."

Fearful of ban, frenzied buyers swarm gun stores

The phones at gun shops across the country are ringing off the hook. Demand for firearms, ammunition and bulletproof gear has surged since the massacre in Newtown, Conn., that took the lives of 20 schoolchildren and six teachers and administrators.

Clerk Lance McCoy shows a variety of weapons including an AR-15 style semi-automatic at Kizer Guns and Ammo near Nacogdoches, Texas. Demand for firearms, ammunition and bulletproof gear has jumped since the Dec. 14 school shooting in Newtown, Conn., that killed 20 children and six adults.

The phones at Red's Trading Post wouldn't stop ringing. Would-be customers from as far away as New York wanted to know if the Twin Falls, Idaho gun shop had firearms in stock. Others clamored to find out if their orders had been shipped.

Overwhelmed, gun store manager Ryan Horsley had to do what no employee would ever think of doing just days before Christmas: He disconnected the phone lines for three whole days.

"We had to shut everything off," says Horsley, whose family has owned Red's Trading Post, the state's oldest gun shop, since 1936. "We were swamped in the store and online."

The phones at gun shops across the country are ringing off the hook. Demand for firearms, ammunition and bulletproof gear has surged since the Dec. 14 massacre in Newtown, Conn., that took the lives of 20 schoolchildren and six teachers and administrators. The shooting sparked calls for tighter gun control measures, especially for military-style assault weapons like the ones used in Newtown and in the Aurora, Colo., movie theater shooting earlier this year. The prospect of a possible weapons ban has sent gun enthusiasts into a panic and sparked a frenzy of buying at stores and gun dealers nationwide.

2012 enters the record books. Were you paying attention? A news quiz.

Assault rifles are sold out across the country. Rounds of .223 bullets, like those used in the AR-15 type Bushmaster rifle used in Newtown, are scarce. Stores are struggling to restock their shelves. Gun and ammunition makers are telling retailers they will have to wait months to get more.

Store owners who have been in the business for years say they have never seen demand like this before.

When asked how much sales have increased in the past few weeks, Horsley just laughed.

"We haven't even had a chance to look at it," he says. Horsley spends his days calling manufacturers around the country trying to buy more items for the store. Mainly, they tell him he has to wait.

Franklin Armory, a firearm maker in Morgan Hill, Calif., is telling dealers that it will take six months to fulfill their orders. The company plans to hire more workers and buy more machines to catch up, says Franklin Armory's President Jay Jacobson.

The shortage is leaving many would-be gun owners empty handed.

William Kotis went to a gun show in Winston-Salem, N.C., last weekend hoping to buy a rifle for target shooting. Almost everything was sold out.

"Assault rifles were selling like crazy," says Kotis, who is president and CEO of Kotis Holdings, a real estate development company based in Greensboro. "People are stockpiling."

He left without buying anything.

Luke Orlando's parents were able to get him the 12-gauge shotgun he wanted for Christmas to bird hunt, but his uncle wasn't as lucky.

"At Christmas dinner, my uncle expressed outrage that after waiting six months to use his Christmas bonus to purchase an AR-15, they are sold out and back ordered over a year," says Orlando, 18, a student at the University of Texas.

Chennai:? Pakistan skipper Misbah-ul Haq has elected to bowl first against India in the first ODI of the three-match series in Chennai.

India have made just one change in their T20 team. Virender Sehwag comes in for Ajinkya Rahane. Pakistan bring in Shoaib Malik in place of Umar Akmal.

Damp patches on the outfield due to overnight rain delayed the start at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Sunday.

Play, which was scheduled to start at 9, had to begin an hour late, with no reduction in the overs. Billy Bowden and S Ravi, the two umpires, made an inspection of the outfield at 8.45 am and pegged the toss at 9.30 am.

This is the first game for both India and Pakistan under the revised playing conditions for ODIs, which include the provision for two bouncers in one over, one new ball at either end, the abolition of the batting Power Play, the mandatory presence of at least five fielders inside the 30-yard circle throughout the 50 overs and the statute that the bowling Power Play must be completed by the end of the 40th over.

NBA scores: Pistons make Central Division proud with upset

While Cavalier fans haven't had much to be happy about over the past two days, the Pistons still represented the division well by knocking off the Miami Heat.

With the Cavaliers losing, the Detroit Pistons were the only Central Division team that was victorious Thursday or Friday with their 109-99 upset over the Miami Heat.

Sure, the Heat may not have been at full power with Dwyane Wade serving a one-game suspension but the victory was still impressive nonetheless. Will Bynum (25 points, 10 assists) led a bench attack for Detroit that combined to produce 64 points between just four players. That performance came just two days after the Pistons' reserves chipped in 85 points in their 126-119 overtime loss to the Atlanta Hawks.

Speaking of the Hawks, Atlanta took to Cleveland in the fourth quarter Friday night with Jeff Teague going off for a career-high 27 points. Kyrie Irving had 28 of his own, but none of those came in the final 2:53 as the Cavaliers went scoreless from that point on.

Anderson Varejao missed Friday's game with the same knee injury that has kept him out of the previous four games. The league's leading rebounder has already been ruled out for Saturday's game against the Nets, but he should be back soon with his ailment being of the non-serious variety, according to Sam Amico of Fox Spots Ohio.

Senate leaders to make last-ditch "fiscal cliff" effort

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama and U.S. congressional leaders agreed on Friday to make a final effort to prevent the United States from going over the "fiscal cliff," setting off intense bargaining over Americans' tax rates as a New Year's Eve deadline looms.

With only days left to avoid steep tax hikes and spending cuts that could cause a recession, two Senate veterans will try to forge a deal that has eluded the White House and Congress for months.

Obama said he was "modestly optimistic" an agreement could be found. But neither side appeared to give much ground at a White House meeting of congressional leaders on Friday.

What they did agree on was to task Harry Reid, the Democratic Senate majority leader, and Mitch McConnell, who heads the chamber's Republican minority, with reaching a budget agreement by Sunday at the latest.

"The hour for immediate action is here. It is now. We're now at the point where in just four days, every American's tax rates are scheduled to go up by law. Every American's paycheck will get considerably smaller. And that would be the wrong thing to do," Obama told reporters.

A total of $600 billion in tax hikes and automatic cuts to government spending will start kicking in on Tuesday - New Year's Day - if politicians cannot reach a deal. Economists fear the measures will push the U.S. economy into a recession.

Pessimism about the fiscal cliff helped push U.S. stocks down on Friday for a fifth straight day. The Dow Jones industrial average dropped 158.20 points, or 1.21 percent. Retailers are blaming worries about the "fiscal cliff" for lackluster Christmas season shopping.

Under the plan hashed out on Friday, any agreement between McConnell and Reid would be backed by the Senate and then approved in the Republican-controlled House of Representatives before the end of the year.

But the House could well be the graveyard of any accord.

A core of fiscal conservatives there strongly opposes Obama's efforts to raise taxes for the wealthiest as part of a plan to close America's budget deficit. House Republicans also want to see Obama commit to major spending cuts.

Talks between Obama and Republican House Speaker John Boehner collapsed last week when several dozen Republicans defied their leader and rejected a plan to raise rates for those earning $1 million and above.

A Democratic aide said Boehner stuck mainly to "talking points" in Friday's White House meeting, with the message that the House had acted on the budget and it was now time for the Senate to move.

TALKS ON 'BIG NUMBERS'

The two Senate leaders and their aides will plunge into talks on Saturday that will focus mainly on the threshold for raising income taxes on households with upper-level earnings, a Democratic aide said. Analysts say both sides could agree on raising taxes for households earning more than $400,000 or $500,000 a year.

The pair will also discuss whether the estate tax should be kept at current low levels or allowed to rise, the aide said.

Democrat Reid warned of tough talks.

"It's not easy, we're dealing with big numbers, and some of that stuff we do is somewhat complicated," he said.

McConnell described Friday's White House summit, also attended by Democratic House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, as "a good meeting."

"So we'll be working hard to try to see if we can get there in the next 24 hours. So I'm hopeful and optimistic," he said.

If things cannot be worked out between the Senate leaders, Obama said he wanted both chambers in Congress to vote on a backup plan that would increase taxes only for households with more than $250,000 of annual income.

The plan would also extend unemployment insurance for about 2 million Americans and set up a framework for a larger deficit reduction deal next year.

There are signs in the options market that investor fear is taking hold. The CBOE Volatility Index, or the VIX, the market's favored anxiety indicator, has remained at relatively low levels throughout this process, but it moved on Friday above 22, the highest level since June.

But some in the market were resigned to Washington going beyond the New Year's Day deadline, as long as a serious agreement on deficit reduction comes out of the talks in early January.

"Regardless of whether the government resolves the issues now, any deal can easily be retroactive. We're not as concerned with January 1 as the market seems to be," said Richard Weiss, a senior money manager at American Century Investments.

Another component of the "fiscal cliff" - $109 billion in automatic spending cuts to military and domestic programs - is set to kick in on Wednesday.

S&P rating agency said on Friday the fiscal cliff impasse did not affect the U.S. sovereign rating.

That lifted the immediate threat of a downgrade from the agency, which cut the United States' triple-A rating in August, 2011 in an unprecedented move after a similar partisan budget fight.
