Panetta warns Israel getting more isolated

(AP) ? Defense Secretary Leon Panetta warned Sunday that Israel is becoming increasingly isolated in the Middle East, and said Israeli leaders must restart negotiations with the Palestinians and work to restore relations with Egypt and Turkey.

In a blunt assessment made as he was traveling to Israel, Panetta said the ongoing upheaval in the Middle East makes it critical for the Israelis to find ways to communicate with other nations in the region in order to have stability.

"There's not much question in my mind that they maintain that (military) edge," Panetta told reporters traveling with him. "But the question you have to ask: Is it enough to maintain a military edge if you're isolating yourself in the diplomatic arena? Real security can only be achieved by both a strong diplomatic effort as well as a strong effort to project your military strength."

Panetta is scheduled to meet this week with Israeli and Palestinian leaders, and then travel to a meeting of NATO defense ministers in Brussels. His visit comes as Mideast negotiators push for a peace deal by the end of next year, amping up pressure for the resumption of long-stalled talks.

The Pentagon chief said Israel risks eroding its own security if it does not reach out to its neighbors.

"It's pretty clear that at this dramatic time in the Middle East, when there have been so many changes, that it is not a good situation for Israel to become increasingly isolated. And that's what's happening," he said.

Panetta said the most important thing now is for Israel and its neighbors "to try to develop better relationships so in the very least they can communicate with each other rather than taking these issues to the streets."

His visit comes at a particularly critical and fragile time.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has asked the U.N. Security Council to recognize an independent Palestinian state in the West Bank, east Jerusalem and Gaza Strip, areas captured by Israel in the 1967 Mideast war. The United States opposed the U.N. bid, saying there is no substitute for direct peace negotiations. But with Israel continuing to build settlements in the West Bank and east Jerusalem, Abbas says there is no point in talking.

Some 500,000 Jewish settlers now live in the West Bank and east Jerusalem. Israel withdrew from Gaza in 2005.

The United States, Britain, France and other council members are likely to try to hold up consideration of the application while they press for a resumption of long-stalled Israeli-Palestinian negotiations, diplomats said.

Negotiators, known as the Quartet, are asking both the Israelis and the Palestinians to produce comprehensive proposals on territory and security within three months.

Israeli officials have welcomed parts of the proposal, but have also expressed concerns about the timetable for some discussions. They also have refused to endorse the 1967 prewar borders as a basis for the future Palestinian state ? something President Barack Obama has endorsed.

The Palestinians, meanwhile, have said they won't return to talks unless Israel freezes settlement building and accepts the pre-1967 war frontier as a baseline for talks.

The Quartet ? the U.S., European Union, United Nations and Russia ? is urging both sides to avoid "provocative actions." Just last week, Israel approved the construction of 1,100 new housing units in an area of Jerusalem built on land captured in 1967, a move that drew widespread international condemnation.

Panetta said he wants to stress to both sides that instead of setting conditions or pursuing other approaches, "the most important thing they can do is go to the negotiating table. That would be a tremendous signal to the world that both the Israelis and the Palestinians want to try to find a solution to these problems. I don't think they really lose anything by getting into negotiations."

Panetta is scheduled to meet with Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, as well as Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Prime Minister Salam Fayyad.

His visit to Israel comes six months after his predecessor, Robert Gates, traveled to the region to meet with Israeli leaders and make the first journey to the West Bank to talk with Fayyad

The U.S. has said it would veto the Palestinians' U.N. request, despite the high political cost in the Arab world. However, Washington would not need to use its veto if the Palestinians fail to get the support of at least nine of 15 council members. Palestinian officials have said they believe they have eight yes votes, and are lobbying for more support.

Boise State's Moore moves up in all-time TDs, wins (AP)

BOISE, Idaho ? With a pair of touchdown passes and another Boise State victory, Kellen Moore moved up the ranks among college football's all time quarterbacks.

But he didn't earn any style points for his latest achievements.

The lefty tossed his 112th and 113th touchdown passes in the first half in Saturday's 30-10 win over Nevada. The second, a 3-yard toss to Matt Miller, put the Broncos up 14-0 and put Moore one shy of surpassing former Florida quarterback Danny Wuerffel.

The win gave Moore 42 for his career and in a three-way tie for second with Georgia's David Greene and TCU's Andy Dalton.

In typical fashion, Moore was more concerned about a clunky, ho-hum overall performance for the Broncos passing game than his personal climb up the NCAA record books.

"It's not the way we want to play, certainly," Moore said. "Bottom line: We didn't execute."

Against an overmatched Nevada defense, Moore was 19 of 33 for 142 yards, a career low. Although he got some help from receivers who dropped balls on several big plays, including what could have been a 50-yard TD pass to a wide open Mitch Burroughs, Moore missed more than his share of targets

He was picked off twice on consecutive possessions in the first half, just the third multiple interception game of his four-year career. And he still appears to be favoring a bum knee that was in a brace for the second straight week.

"No, I haven't," said coach Chris Petersen when asked if he'd ever seen Moore, one of the nation's most accurate passers, miss so many open teammates."

"All those things kind of happen split-second," Petersen added. "It is amazing that he hasn't made more throws like that over his career. But, it is always kind of surprising when something like that does happen because he is such a good decision maker."

One lackluster outing is hardly cause for panic in southwestern Idaho. And Moore insists his gimpy knee has anything to do with his throwing and accuracy

It should also be noted Moore may still be adjusting to a new cast of young receivers, a group lacking Geraldo Boldewijn, who at 6-foot-4 was expected to be one of Moore's favorite targets heading into the season. But Boldewijn, who was born in the Netherlands, has missed all four games due to eligibility questions still unresolved by the NCAA and his return to the field remains uncertain.

The Broncos were also playing with two new starters on the offensive line Saturday. Chuck Hayes started at right guard for starter Jake Broyles, who is lost for the season with a toe injury, and Cory Yriarte started at center for stalwart Thomas Byrd, who remains week to week.

What saved the Broncos was a rejuvenated running game.

Led by Doug Martin, Boise State rushed for 169 yards on the ground, and it could have been more had Martin's 92-yard TD scamper in the fourth quarter been nullified by a penalty.

Martin finished with 126 yards and two TDs on 21 carries, the first time all season a Bronco running back has eclipsed the 100-yard mark.

"Fortunately our run game came to life a little bit," Petersen said. "I care more about that than the pass game, because I know we'll get that figured out, so I think we made a step there."

Petersen also acknowledged that starting cornerback Jerrell Gavins, who leads the team with three interceptions, will miss the rest of the season after injuring a knee in practice.

Sex, race, and the Republican presidential campaign

Rick Perry is under fire for the racial slur that was the name of his family?s hunting camp. Meanwhile, all the GOP presidential candidates are being asked why they didn't stop the booing when a gay soldier raised "don't ask, don't tell" at their recent debate.

Maybe it?s been a slow weekend on the campaign trail (or we?re all just bored with polls and debates), but sexual orientation and race have injected themselves ? refreshingly, dare one say? ? into the GOP presidential race.

Specifically, Republicans are being taken to task (in some cases, by their own number) for what seemed to be the audience?s insensitive response to a gay soldier who asked a question of candidates by video at the most recent GOP debate.

Meanwhile, Texas Governor Rick Perry is under fire for the racial slur that was the name of his family?s hunting camp.

A 3,000-word piece in Sunday?s Washington Post, reported from Perry?s hometown of Paint Creek, Tex., asserts that ?In the early years of his political career, Rick Perry began hosting fellow lawmakers, friends and supporters at his family?s secluded West Texas hunting camp, a place known by the name painted in block letters across a large, flat rock standing upright at its gated entrance. ?N?..head,? it read.? (Except the story spells out the name.)

?Over the years, civil rights groups and government agencies have had some success changing those and other racially offensive names that dotted the nation?s maps,? notes Post reporter Stephanie McCrummen. ?But the name of this particular parcel did not change for years after it became associated with Rick Perry, first as a private citizen, then as a state official and finally as Texas governor. Some locals still call it that. As recently as this summer, the slablike rock ? lying flat, the name still faintly visible beneath a coat of white paint ? remained by the gated entrance to the camp.?

The story notes that Perry grew up in a segregated part of the country before the passage of major civil rights laws, and it quotes him as saying the word on the rock is an ?offensive name that has no place in the modern world.?

But on Fox News Sunday, Republican presidential hopeful Herman Cain (who is African American) took Perry to task over the issue.

There isn't "a more vile, negative word than the N word," Cain said. "For him to leave it there as long as he did before ... they finally painted over it, is just plain insensitive to a lot of black people in this country."

The Perry camp was quick with damage control.

Ray Sullivan, communications director for the Perry campaign, said the governor's father, Ray Perry, leased the hunting rights in the early 1980s and that Rick Perry was on the lease from 1997 to 2007. Rick Perry has not visited the property since December 2006, Sullivan told the Associated Press.
