iPhone 4S hates my car

I have a Pioneer FH-P8000BT in my car, which worked just fine with my old cheap feature phones and my old iPod touch, but the bluetooth function is unreliable with my iPhone. I can get it to connect and transfer the phone book just fine, I can start a call, answer a call, and siri sometimes understands me. The issue is sustaining a call.

The conversation starts to break up, as if I am loosing a signal, but when I change over to using the phone without bluetooth, it's just fine. This happens with and without the USB connection to the stereo.

I exchanged the phone and have the same problem. I can't figure out why I can get cheap phones to work just fine, but my iPhone goes nuts when using bluetooth in the car.

I tried using an old plantronics earpiece with the phone for comparison. Surprise, that works just fine, and siri understands me even better. I'm stumped and don't buy that it's the stereo because, as I have said, it worked perfectly with crap phones.

Any ideas?

Android-Powered ?Ninja Master? Robot Wants to Punch You

Imagine playing with a Rock ?em Sock ?em Robot, but you?re the one getting socked. This week at Google I/O, Japanese technology company RT Corporation showed off its ?Ninja Master,? a boxing robot which is powered by an every day Android tablet.?

We had a chance to stop by RT Corporation?s booth and fight the Ninja Master in person. At around 4 feet tall by our estimation, the Master is about the size of a small child and has metallic legs and arms that can move with a great deal of?articulation. A 10-inch Acer Iconia tablet sat in the spot where his head should have been with USB cables running between it and the body.

At the booth, Ninja Master was wearing boxing gloves, shorts and a robe, but this $50,000 robot is not being marketed as a gaming machine. He?s being sold to research institutions and others with deep pockets to use as they see fit, perhaps as a robot that works with children or even a telepresence device. However, here at Google I/O, he?s a boxer, because that shows off many of his key strengths (pun intended).

After firing up a client application on a Windows PC and opening the Ninja Master?s boxing app on his tablet face, a representative from RT corp stood behind a camera and made gestures which caused the robot to move the same way. If the human punched upward so did the robot. If the human took a step forward, so did the robot. Later on, she also moved the robot using a standard game controller that was wired to the PC.

The boxing app was a really simple program that showed a cartoon face for the robot and had a timer with about 3 minutes on it and a set of stars representing the robot?s life points. The Ninja Master on display had a red button right below his neck and, every time we hit the button, he lost a life point. While we were trying to hit the button, an RT corp rep was using gesture control to try to block and hit us with the robot?s fists. If Ninja Master could outlast the timer, he?d win and, if I hit his button five times, he?d lose.

It was easy to push Ninja Master?s button and beat him at his own game, but the ease or difficulty of the game was not the point. We were very impressed with the robot?s ability accept gesture controls, its fluid arm movements and its ability to walk. And the brains behind all of this is a standard Android tablet.

Egypt's first Islamist president, Mohammed Morsi, took his oath of office on Saturday, ending six decades of rule by former military men although the generals in charge since Hosni Mubarak was ousted last year have already curbed his powers.?

Morsi was sworn in before the Supreme Constitutional Court, rather than parliament as is usual. The Islamist-led lower house was dissolved by the same court shortly before this month's run-off presidential election.??

"I swear by Almighty God that I will sincerely protect the republican system and that I respect the constitution and the rule of law," Morsi said, after making the same declaration a day earlier in front of tens of thousands of people in Tahrir Square.?

"I will look after the interests of the people and protect the independence of the nation and safety of its territory," he said before the head of the constitutional court Farouk Soltan and other judges.?

'The will of the people'
He was speaking in the court building next to the Cairo hospital where the jailed former president has been moved.?

Morsi said a civilian and constitutional state had been "born today," in his comments after swearing the oath. The ceremony was broadcast by state media.?

As Morsi takes office, many fear the 'Islamization of Egyptian society'

One of the judges, Maher Sami, began the ceremony by saying that event had "no parallel in all of Egypt's history and was created by the will of the people."?

In his inaugural address to the nation,?Morsi began by paying tribute to the martyrs of the revolution and vowed to honor their sacrifices through his work and the administration's work.

He reiterated points he has made repeatedly before about working to strengthen Egypt's economy and restarting investment and trade.?

Israel treaty safe
He also said Egypt would abide by all of its international treaties and obligations -- meaning the 33-year-old peace treaty with Israel -- and promised to work to make Egypt a modern civil state that upholds laws and abides by the constitution.

"We carry a message of peace to the world," Morsi said in a segment intended to reassure the world that his tenure posed no threat to regional order.

He struck a rather defiant tone by saying on more than one occasion that the Egyptian people had democratically elected a parliament and that the will of the people must be respected.

He promised the state would be made up of democratic institutions and that the military would return to its bases and its role of defending the country. He promised to strengthen and develop the Armed Forces and?to keep Egypt's judiciary independent.

On foreign policy, Morsi said he we would stand with the Palestinian people until they achieved their legitimate rights and sovereignty over their land.?He added that he would work to help Palestinian national reconciliation.

Huge crowds are expected to gather to see Egypt's new president Mohammed Morsi take an oath of office on Saturday. NBC's Brian Williams reports.

Morsi said Egypt stood with the people of Syria and that the bloodshed must end. In a nod to Arab monarchies, he promised Egypt would not attempt to export its revolution to other countries and that Egypt would not accept other countries interfering in its domestic affairs.?

On Friday, Morsi defied the ruling generals by reading a symbolic oath of office in Tahrir Square, where Egypt's revolution was born.?

"Everybody is hearing me now. The government ... the military and the police. ... No power above this power," he told the tens of thousands of mostly Islamist supporters packing the square. "I reaffirm to you I will not give up any of the president's authorities. I can't afford to do this. I don't have that right."?

Post-revolution Egyptians to US: Stay out

At one point, Morsi opened his jacket to show the crowd he was not wearing a bulletproof vest, then declared he "fears no one but God."?

"We love you Morsi!" the crowd roared in response as the 60-year-old U.S.-trained engineer left the podium to get closer to the cheering crowd.?

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? In the six years he's managed a sanctuary for abused and orphaned chimpanzees, South African conservationist Eugene Cussons is from time to time called on to comment when an ape elsewhere in the world attacks a human. Cussons says he could always pinpoint a moment of taunting or perceived aggression that could have set off the quick and powerful animals.

This time, though, the attack was at his own Jane Goodall Institute Chimpanzee Eden in eastern South Africa. And Cussons, host of the Animal Planet show "Escape to Chimp Eden," is without an explanation.

In telephone interview Saturday, Cussons said he would have to wait until the severely injured victim, a University of Texas at San Antonio anthropology graduate student who was inspired by famed primatologist Jane Goodall to study chimps, was well enough to provide details on what sparked Thursday's attack.

It was the first such attack since Cussons, working with Goodall's renowned international institute, converted part of his family's game farm into the sanctuary in 2006.

"You can train for it, you can do your best to prepare," Cussons said. "But when it actually happens, it's shocking and traumatic for everyone."

Cussons's team quickly evacuated the dozen tourists to whom Andrew F. Oberle had been giving a lecture and tried to separate the chimps from Oberle. In the end, Cussons, who was himself attacked by a chimp as he tried to pull it off Oberle, took the extreme step of firing into the air, scaring the animals away.

Oberle was bitten repeatedly and dragged for nearly a kilometer (half mile). Cussons said one of the chimps was injured in the scuffle, and he was awaiting a veterinarian's report to determine the nature and extent of the injury. No one else was hurt.

Male chimps can stand up to 1.7 meters (5 feet, 7 inches) tall and weigh about 70 kilograms (154 pounds), according to the Jane Goodall institute. The two chimps that attacked Oberle were male, though the sanctuary's website did not say how large those animals were.

Cussons said it was the first time he had asked Oberle to speak to visitors. The student had arrived last month for a follow-up study visit after an extended stay to observe the chimps a year or so ago, Cussons said. As a researcher, Cussons said Oberle had been trained to ensure he understood how the animals might behave and knew to keep a safe distance. Cussons said Oberle was given additional training before addressing the tour group.

Cussons said Oberle broke the rules by going through the first of two fences that separate humans from the chimps. The chimps then grabbed him and pulled him under the second fence, which is electrified. Cussons said it was unclear why Oberle had moved so dangerously close.

Only after Oberle is well enough to talk will investigators "be able to find out why he crossed the safety fence to go on to the main fence," Cussons said.

Mediclinic Nelspruit hospital said Saturday that the 26-year-old Oberle remained in critical condition in intensive care. Oberle underwent surgery at the hospital Thursday.

Cussons said Saturday that Oberle's mother was on her way to South Africa. Oberle's mother, Mary Flint of St. Louis, said Friday that chimpanzees have been her son's passion since seventh grade, when he watched a film about Goodall.

Goodall, a Cambridge University-trained ethnologist, began studying chimpanzees in Tanzania's Gombe National Park in 1960. Since 1994, her institute has been involved in conservation programs across Africa. The institute says its Tchimpounga Chimpanzee Rehabilitation Center in Congo is the largest chimpanzee sanctuary in Africa.

Flint said Oberle knew the risks of working with chimps and would not want them blamed for the attack.

"He adored them," she said. "Since he was a little boy he just loved them, and I just have faith that ... when all is said and done, he's going to go right back into it."

The sanctuary has been closed to tourists since the attack, while government and police officials investigate. The Jane Goodall Institute South Africa is conducting its own investigation.

"Everyone at Chimp Eden is hurting," Cussons said, saying the thoughts of staff members were with Oberle and his family.

Cussons said the two chimps that attacked Oberle, Amadeus and Nikki, had been isolated in their night pens since the attack. He said they were calm and exhibiting remorse, which he said chimps show by behaving submissively.

Human-animal contact is kept to a minimum at the sanctuary, designed as a haven for chimpanzees, which are not native to South Africa, that have been rescued from elsewhere in Africa. Some lost their parents to poachers in countries where they are hunted for their meat or to be sold as pets, and others were held in captivity in cruel conditions.

"They come here and we rehabilitate them by giving them space ... and contact with their own kind," Cussons said. According to the sanctuary's website, one of the chimps involved in the attack, Amadeus, was orphaned in Angola and brought to South Africa in 1996, where he was kept at the Johannesburg Zoo until the sanctuary opened. The other, Nikki, came from Liberia in 1996 and also was held at the zoo until becoming among the first chimps at the sanctuary. Before arriving in South Africa, Nikki, whose parents were killed for their meat, had been treated like a son by his owners, who dressed him in clothes, shaved his body and taught him to eat at a table using cutlery, the website said.

In the United States, a Connecticut woman, Charla Nash, was attacked in 2009 by a friend's chimpanzee that ripped off her nose, lips, eyelids and hands before being killed by police. The woman was blinded and has had a face transplant. Lawyers for Nash filed papers this week accusing state officials of failing to seize the animal before the mauling despite a warning that it was dangerous.

Britain's High Court on Thursday blocked a U.S. bid to extradite Shawn Sullivan to Minnesota, saying the state's restrictive treatment program for sex offenders was too draconian.

LONDON -- Minnesota?prosecutors'?efforts to have a convicted sexual predator brought to trial in the United States were thwarted on Thursday?when Britain's High Court dropped extradition proceedings, saying the U.S. hadn't guaranteed the suspect would be kept out a program some deem draconian.?

Shawn Sullivan, 43, is?accused of molesting two girls and raping a third in the 1990s in Minnesota. Sullivan fled the United States and eventually ended up in London, where authorities caught up to him two years ago.?

Judges Alan Moses and David Eady said in a ruling finalized Thursday that if Sullivan were returned to the U.S., he could face a real risk of being placed in the state's civil commitment program --?which provides for the indefinite detention of people found to be sexually dangerous --?and suffer "a flagrant denial of his rights."?

'Slap in the face'
One of Sullivan's accusers called the decision "a slap in the face."?

"That whole argument is just irrational," Jessica Schaefer, 29, told The Associated Press. Sullivan allegedly molested her and her cousin when they were both 11.

"It's just another loophole in the justice system that caters to the criminals. All they have to do is find a loophole or a technicality and they walk. ... "I feel like I'm just pleading for justice, and I'm not getting anywhere."?

UK court backs extradition of Assange in sex case

The AP does not identify alleged victims of sexual assault without their consent. The Minnesota women Sullivan is accused of attacking as children agreed to let the AP use their names.?

Two Minnesota prosecutors in the counties where Sullivan faces charges defended their decision not to guarantee Sullivan would be kept out of the program, saying it was "not in the interests of public safety."?

"I think it's way beyond reasonableness for them to interfere in how we conduct business," said Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman.?

Irish conviction
Sullivan escaped to Ireland as prosecutors prepared to file charges, and while staying there was convicted of sexually assaulting two 12-year-old girls. Sullivan, a dual U.S.-Irish citizen, moved to London using an Irish passport that spelled his last name in Gaelic as "O'Suilleabhain."?

The British judges made clear in an earlier decision that they would have supported Sullivan's extradition had it not been for the sex treatment program, which they described as among the toughest in the U.S.?

The program, which began in its current form in the mid-1990s, allows courts to commit a person for sex offender treatment if a judge decides the person is sexually psychopathic or sexually dangerous. As of April 1, 641 people were in Minnesota's program.?

The program faces constitutional challenges by some who say it holds people indefinitely after their prison sentences. One 64-year-old man received a provisional discharge earlier this year when he was allowed to move into a Minneapolis-area halfway house. Only one other person was ever released from the program, and was soon taken back into custody on a violation.?

The justices in London outlined a litany of concerns in their June 20 decision, noting offenders don't have to be mentally ill to be committed; their offenses don't have to be recent; and in some cases, they don't even have to have been convicted of a crime.?

UK judge Moses said on Thursday that "the United States will not provide an assurance," thus allowing Sullivan's appeal, according to The Independent newspaper.

"The appellant will be discharged from the proceedings," the judge said, according to the paper.

'Open the floodgates'
Officials with the Minnesota Department of Human Services said they don't know of any instances where someone without a criminal conviction has been placed in the program, though they acknowledged it's theoretically possible.?

Dakota County Attorney James Backstrom, who charged Sullivan with molesting the 11-year-old girls, said authorities hadn't decided whether to pursue civil commitment. However, he said making such a guarantee "could open the floodgates."?

"It's a very slippery slope to go down once you start making agreements," Backstrom said.

Peter Wold, Sullivan's criminal defense attorney in Minnesota, said the British judges balked at the prospect of indefinite detention. "That offended them, and it should offend a lot of people, to have the prospect of people being committed with no end in sight," he said.?

Human rights concerns periodically complicate efforts by U.S. prosecutors to extradite suspects. For example, European Union countries typically won't extradite suspects who could face capital punishment to the U.S. unless American prosecutors give assurances they won't seek the death penalty.?

Still, Bruce Zagaris, a Washington, D.C.,-based?attorney specializing in international criminal law, said this was one of the first cases he had seen in which the U.K. has said no to extradition.?

"I think foreign courts no longer give us the benefit of the doubt," Zagaris said.

Cops hunt 'predator' who killed six-year-old girl, dumped her body in Utah canal

Sullivan still faces a civil case in Minnesota, and Michael Hall III, the attorney representing the three alleged victims, said he expects that to go forward. He said significant punitive damages are possible.?

Sullivan's attorney in the civil case was out of the office Thursday and did not return a message.?

Hannah Treziok, who was 14 when she says Sullivan raped her, said she was disappointed with the British court's ruling but that she had prepared herself for this possibility.?

"The reality is, we, the victims, have for 18 years been fighting the good fight, and there is no shame in that," she said. "Even though it is not the exact outcome that we desired ... we brought him out of the shadows and exposed him for who and what he really is."?

A U.S. International Trade Commission panel, which had been expected to issue a decision in August on whether to ban import of the Xbox, has remanded the Motorola vs. Microsoft case back to the judge that had initially determined that Microsoft had violated four Motorola patents, according to Reuters.

The ITC judge had made his initial determination in April. But it would take the full six-member commission to impose an import ban.

"The full commission said on Friday that it would send the case back to the judge for reconsideration. That reconsideration will likely take months," Reuters reported.

Motorola, now a Google unit, had asked the ITC to prohibit Microsoft from importing Xboxes into the U.S. from Asia, where they are manufactured. Motorola contended that Microsoft infringed on Motorola's patents involving technologies related to wireless standard and viewing video on the Internet.Three of the four Motorola patents that the ITC judge had deemed Microsoft as infringing upon are industry standard patents.

The FTC and European Commission are investigating whether Google's Motorola unit is licensing its industry-standard patents on fair and reasonable terms, as it has agreed to do, according to Bloomberg.

[Update 5:11 p.m.: Microsoft issued a statement on the ITC panel's decision today, saying:

Today's decision by the Commission directs the judge to re-consider arguments made by Microsoft. In our view this should result in dismissal of Motorola's entire case against the Xbox. On three patents the commission directed the judge to apply clear legal authority that should result in dismissal of those patents. In addition, the Commission directed the judge to consider whether certain contractual commitments made by Google should result in dismissal of the remaining patent.

Update 8:11 p.m.: Motorola sent a statement, saying: "We look forward to presenting these two cases identified by the commission and we remain confident in our position."]
