Brain cancer survivor, Kami Combes, with her husband, Patrick.
She was getting ready for bed at about 10 p.m., when she began feeling dizzy and lightheaded. And that was that. The next morning, Kami Combes woke up as if nothing had happened. Except that her husband was home. Her children were up and home. Her parents were in the living room. ?They said you have to go to the doctor,? she recalled. This was in March of 2007, Combes was 32. She first went to the Swedish Clinic on Queen Anne Avenue North and then was directed to Swedish on First Hill. There she was given an MRI and went home with instructions to return the next day. The following day doctors announced that she had a tumor in her brain roughly the size of a pea. But it was in the middle of her brain. Hard to get to. The subsequent biopsy showed the pea was cancerous. Stage 2 and progressing. In June the operation to remove the tumor commenced. Doctors were able to remove it without damaging Combes? brain. Directly after the surgery came the six weeks of radiation. Similar to the MRI, Combes was immobilized. She wore a mask that was pinned down around her head to help keep her face still. Then came the chemotherapy, sickly and gutwrenching. Four pills a day for five days, then a 25-day break. Then repeat for five more months. ?I got super sick from that,? Combes said from her home in Queen Anne. ?Lots of people get tired, I got sick.? The first few days were the worst she said. Her parents, who live near Seattle Pacific University, took her into their home and took care of her. Combes? husband, meanwhile, took care of the kids and worked. Bills were piling up, but ?we were lucky to have good insurance,? Combes said with an audible sigh. By February of 2008, after the operation, the radiation, the chemotherapy, the vomiting and slight hair loss, it was over. The diagnosis was good, doctors said. To this day she continues to get the occasional MRI, but there has been no sign of cancer, only gratitude. Combes, since then, has been making the annual pilgrimage that is the Seattle Brain Cancer Walk, a national event that raises awareness of brain cancer and raises funds to pay for brain cancer research and comprehensive care for patients and their families in the Pacific Northwest. The first two years saw the walk take place on Mercer Island. Now it?s at the Seattle Center. Today is the last day to register. The money raised from the walk will go right to paying for research ? research that has already seen results. The Ivy Brain Tumor Center at Swedish, in collaboration with Accium Biosciences, leveraged $50,000 from the 2008 Brain Cancer Walk and another $180,000 from the National Cancer Institute to use Accium?s 15-ton particle accelerator. The device analyzes tumor tissue to figure out how much of a chemotherapy drug reaches its target. The information can improve individual patient?s care by discovering medications that are and are not working. The technology didn?t exist when Combes was diagnosed. Knowing that its presence is in part due to funds from the walk has inspired her to keep walking. And this year an anonymous donor contributed $500,000 to the cause. ?Not all can do it,? Combes said of the walk, during which she and other survivors wear green shirts. ?But you can go and meet other people and kids can come. Researchers at the Institute of Electronics, Communications and Information Technology (ECIT) and the Northern Ireland Semiconductor Research Centre (NISRC) at Queen's University Belfast have devised a way to eliminate the need for motors in space borne radiometers by incorporating liquid crystals in their Frequency Selective Surface (FSS) antenna arrays.
The project has attracted funding of 0.5 million from the European Space Agency (ESA) and 100,000 from economic development agency, Invest Northern Ireland. It is expected to result in significant weight savings in satellite payloads and greatly reduced power consumption in weather monitoring instruments.
The technology has other important potential applications as well. These include eradicating the attenuation of mobile phone signals passing through energy efficient glass and creating buildings that can be locked down to block radio signals at the flick of a switch.
The innovative ECIT project addresses frequencies ranging from millimeter wave up to 1 THz. Measuring radiation in this waveband is a key technique used to study the earth's atmosphere to improve global weather forecasting and understanding of climate change.
Current generation remote sensing radiometers that collect this data incorporate a turntable-mounted mirror operated by an electric motor to calibrate the instrument before each scan by directing their field of view between cold and ambient targets.
The ECIT/NISRC research team however has devised a technique for making such motors redundant. This involves sandwiching layers of liquid crystals between the FSS's metalized quartz layers to act as an electronically controlled shutter. Applying a small voltage to the structure then enables the radiometer to be switched from calibration mode to signal detection mode without mechanical components.
The team believes that using this technique to replace the motor and turntable could produce potential weight savings of 10 per cent per radiometer. It would also greatly reduce power consumption requirements as a motor represents a radiometer's single biggest power requirement.
Prototypes are being built at Queen's University's Northern Ireland Semiconductor Research Centre with ESA support and the devices are expected to be used in space missions from 2025 onwards.

The frontrunner said he felt a bit ?like a pinata? during the Sept. 7 POLITICO/MSNBC debate, his first of the 2012 race, even as he lobbed plenty of his own shots.
But a week later, Perry was pummeled again by his rivals for two solid hours during the CNN/Tea Party Express event in Tampa, barely putting up a fight as Michele Bachmann ripped him over his mandate of an HPV vaccine for young girls.
He seemed ill-prepared, and something close to fatigued, especially during the second half, underscoring existing questions for Republicans on the sidelines about whether the Texas governor is prepared for the rigors of the presidential nominating process.
Veteran GOP strategist Alex Castellanos suggested going on offense Thursday won?t be a problem for Perry.
?One thing we?ve learned about Rick Perry is that if you say ?hello? to him he?ll knock your block off,? Castellanos said. ?He?s got one gear and that is ?attack.? So I think we?re going to see the gunfight at the Austin Corral here. This is going to be a pretty spirited debate this time.?
Perry needs to put Romney on his heels, and quick ? in order to stave off the expected attacks on Social Security, and on immigration, an area where the Texas governor is not as aligned with the right as some others on stage. Perry needs to show more polished responses on Social Security and the HPV vaccine, not to mention avoid quips like the one in which he suggested $5,000 was too low a price to purchase him.
?One of the tests for his job is, can people see you not just as the candidate they like, but the president they need,? Castellanos said. ?And you would think one of the things he has to [prove] is that he?s not only strong, but that he?s steady.?
Does Romney pin Perry down on Social Security and illegal immigration?
They are the two hot topics in Florida, and Romney previewed on Wednesday that he?ll be hitting at least one of those issues hard at the Orlando debate.
The former Massachusetts governor showed no sign that he?ll let up on his Social Security slams on Perry, as he read aloud at a town hall meeting six questions his campaign had prepared about the Texas governor?s thoughts on the topic. Already the best debater on the stage, Romney will have his lines teed up.
Perry knows it?s coming and is poised to push back hard - his campaign has introduced a line about Romney ?sounding like a Democrat? in defense of the status quo.
?My guess is that Perry will have some offense in store for Mitt simply because they don?t want to be a punching bag on Social Security all night,? said longtime GOP strategist Mike Murphy.
But Romney may also have something else in store for Perry. The likeliest topics are Medicare or illegal immigration, both of which are fertile territory against Perry.
