PFT: Broncos not worried about Peyton's slow start

Wayne Elliott has had a wild week.

On Monday night, he wore the white hat as the referee of the crew that bungled the Seahawks-Packers game.? On Friday night, Elliott worked a high school football game.

In the interim, Elliott says his phone has been ringing with calls from angry fans, telling him he should ?commit suicide? and that he ?should die.?

But he still believes it was the right call.

?The replay guy just said there is nothing here that we can use to overturn it. It?s going to stand,? Elliott told FOX7 in Austin.? (This confirm that, when it came to replay reviews during the lockout, non-replacement replay officials were actually usurping the authority of the on-field referees.)

As we recently explained, via the NFL?s rulebook and casebook, there was enough evidence to overturn the ruling on the field, because Packers safety M.D. Jennings had ?control? of the ball before Seahawks receiver Golden Tate, which is the key factor regardless of what happens as they land on the ground and wrestle for the ball.? (Sorry, Seahawks truthers, but that?s the truth.)

Elliott also said he has ?no regrets? about accepting the assignment as a replacement, and that it was ?the most fun I?ve ever had.?

It was the most fun he?s had because he has been working as an official at the lower levels of the sport since 1978.? The fact that he hadn?t risen to the NFL or to a high-end college conference in the past 34 years tells us all we need to know about his overall skills.? As we?ve said time and again, if the replacements were among the best of the best, they would have been among those who were locked out.

Elliott declined to apologize to the fans of the Packers, explaining that if the call had gone the other way people would be asking if he should apologize to the Seahawks fans.

Scheduled to work the Vikings-Lions game in Week Four, Elliott said he wanted to ?get the bad taste out of his mouth? from Monday night?s game ? you know, the one for which he has nothing about which to apologize.

Relief ruling fires up McIlroy at Ryder Cup

MEDINAH, Ill. (AP) ? The Americans finally have some momentum at the Ryder Cup.

And it's coming from some most unlikely sources.

Phil Mickelson and Ryder Cup rookie Keegan Bradley have won three straight holes to go 3-up on Luke Donald and Sergio Garcia with four holes to play. Neither of the Europeans ever lost in foursomes, and are 4-0 when paired in alternate-shot matches.

The U.S. also leads in the foursome of Jason Dufner and Zach Johnson vs. Lee Westwood and Francesco Molinari. The momentum in that match turned on the ninth hole, when Dufner's 15-foot birdie putt stopped a half-turn short of the hole. After about a half-second hesitation, the ball dropped in and the low-key Dufner pumped his fist.

The Americans are making up some ground against Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell, who seemed to be well on their way to Europe's first point after six birdies on their first 10 holes.

Mo. Sen. McCaskill defends self as polite, calm

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) ? Missouri Sen. Claire McCaskill defended herself as "polite and calm" Friday in response to accusations from Republican challenger Todd Akin that she wasn't very "ladylike" in a recent debate.

McCaskill told The Associated Press that some of Akin's remarks have left her "a little speechless." Akin said Thursday that McCaskill "came out swinging" in their Sept. 21 debate. He said that contrasted with her 2006 debates against then-Sen. Jim Talent, when Akin said, "she had a confidence and was very much more sort of ladylike and all."

McCaskill frequently criticized Akin's policies, beginning with her opening statement, during the debate hosted by the Missouri Press Association.

But the Democratic senator said Friday: "I'm hoping that people will weigh in and defend me that I was polite and calm. This wildcat, you know, furious and unladylike is kind of a headscratcher."

Akin's comments ? whether mistaken or intentional ? have loomed large in Missouri's Senate race since shortly after he won the Aug. 7 Republican primary. They also have generated ripples through national politics, including the presidential race and Republicans' efforts to gain the four seats necessary to win control of the Senate from Democrats.

Last month, Akin told a TV interviewer asking about his opposition to abortion that women's bodies have ways of averting pregnancy in cases of "legitimate rape." Akin has apologized repeatedly since then but rejected calls from top Republicans ? including presidential nominee Mitt Romney ? to quit the race. Meanwhile, Akin has lost the financial backing of the National Republican Senatorial Committee and the deep-pocketed Crossroads group affiliated with GOP strategist Karl Rove.

Democrats have attempted to link Akin's "ladylike" comment to his remark about "legitimate rape" to suggest he is insensitive to women and to help drive their own fundraising efforts.

The Democratic National Committee and Emily's List, which backs Democratic women who support abortion rights, both cited the remarks in fundraising emails Thursday. On Friday, New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand highlighted Akin's remarks as the centerpiece of an online fundraising drive to raise $75,000 for McCaskill in two days.

Akin also received a recent fundraising boost, picking up the endorsement Thursday of the Senate Conservatives Fund, whose members pledged $290,000 for his campaign.

Ann Romney: biggest fear is for Mitt's "mental well-being"

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Ann Romney told a Nevada television station her biggest concern if her husband, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, becomes president was his "mental well-being."

In an interview Thursday with television station KTVN, Mrs. Romney was asked what her biggest worry was should Mitt Romney be elected to serve in the White House.

"I think my biggest concern obviously would just be for his mental well-being," she said. "I have all the confidence in the world in his ability, in his decisiveness, in his leadership skills, in his understanding of the economy. ... So for me I think it would just be the emotional part of it."

Mrs. Romney has been campaigning hard for her husband, with some bumps in the road. She had minor surgery on her right hand recently, making it difficult for her to shake hands, the Nevada station reported.

In Iowa a week ago, she had a tough response for the Republicans who have criticized her husband.

"Stop it. This is hard. You want to try it? Get in the ring," she told an Iowa radio station. "This is hard. It's an important thing that we're doing right now."

The U.S. presidential election is on November 6.

Q&A: AEG's Tim Leiweke discusses Farmers Field, NFL in L.A.

With the Los Angeles City Council clearing the way for AEG's Farmers Field, an NFL stadium next to Staples Center, the nation's No. 2 market and No. 1 sports league inched closer to a reunion. But with Philip Anschutz putting AEG up for sale, how does that impact the likelihood of an NFL return? And how does L.A. billionaire Patrick Soon-Shiong factor into the equation?

After Friday's unanimous council votes, AEG President Tim Leiweke spoke with Times NFL columnist Sam Farmer about the Farmers Field vision, and how (and when) he sees the NFL returning.

Question: What does it mean to clear this hurdle?

Answer: It demonstrates to the 32 owners that we now have the ability to finally get this done. We have an ability now to create a long-term play for the NFL where they might be able to create one of the most successful franchises in the league, and they won't have to ever worry about L.A. again.

Q: How long had biotech investor Soon-Shiong been aware of the pending AEG sale?

A: Patrick and I have known each other for a long time. Patrick and I have been talking about this for the last three or four weeks ? just that short a time ? because this is not something that Phil decided he wanted to do until the last four to eight weeks.

Q: Was Anschutz ever really interested in the NFL? Why did he walk away from this deal?

A: No question that the NFL has been a management push. But you don't spend $40 million, use that kind of time and energy, put yourself in these kinds of public negotiations without him being fully on board. He was always on board with it. He'll be the first to acknowledge the next investor that steps into this role will be far more passionate probably about football, owning a team, and being a part of the NFL. And Phil's OK with that.

Q: Will Soon-Shiong be that next investor?

A: I think Patrick is going to be one. There's a half-dozen people that Mr. Anschutz has heard from already. There are going to be many people that look at it with a view to do it.

Q: Have you met with the Guggenheim group regarding the NFL?

A: We talk to them about a lot of different things, including football. I can't speak on their behalf, but I can tell you I hear the same rumors you do, and my job is to field all comers in order to protect the best interest of AEG and Phil. It would be great if they had an interest, and I hope they do.

Q: There's no groundswell in L.A. for an NFL team. Does that concern you?

A: That's L.A. People said we weren't a great hockey town until we made our playoff run, and now we're the greatest hockey town in the United States, and we're sold out every night ? if we could just start playing again.

Q: Do you expect an NFL team to apply to relocate during the league-required window of the first six weeks of 2013?

A: In order for us to play in this game, we have to be prepared to be able to accept a team next year.

Q: When is the last time you talked to the Chargers?

A: I haven't talked to Dean Spanos [the team's president and chairman] in a long time.

Q: Have you talked to the Rams?
