Japanese still trust power companies, just

Continuing the surveys into nuclear power, this one from Central Research Services looks at the earthquake and power companies.

Demographics

First, 3,954 people over the age of twenty were selected at random from voters polls, but the samples were weighted by size of each of the electricity generating companies? customer base. These 3,954 were approached for face-to-face interviews between the 13th and 22nd of May 2011, and 1,308 people, or 33.1%, actually completed the survey. 54.1% of the sample were female, 11.4% in their twenties, 18.7% in their thirties, 15.7% in their forties, 16.8% in their fifties, 18.3% in their sixties, and 19.7% aged seventy or older.

I?m surprised that the level of trust just manages to pass the average point even now, especially in the earthquake-affected area, and given the much lower safety rating of nuclear power generation. Perhaps they have been very quick to repair powerlines and restore services to affected areas?

Research results

Q1: On a scale of zero (not at all) to ten (sufficiently), how much do you trust your local electricity generator now, and how much did you trust them before the earthquake? (Sample size=1,308)

Current trust level 5.56
Trust level before earthquake 6.96

The highest current level of trust was in Kyushu at 6.34 points, then Kinki (Kansai excluding Osaka and Kobe) at 6.28 and Tohoku (earthquake area) at 6.26. The lowest was Kanto (area surrounding Tokyo) at 4.60 points, Keihama (Tokyo and Yokohama) at 4.64, then Shikoku at 5.34. By age those aged seventy or older were most trustful at 6.03 points, then those in their twenties at 5.75. Lowest was those in their fifties, at 5.20 points.

The highest pre-earthquake level of trust was in Koshinetsu area at 7.77 points, Kanto at 7.18 and Tohoku at 7.08. The lowest was Hokuriki at 6.26 points, Shikoku at 6.40 and Chugoku at 6.46. Pre-earthquake trust by age group was not reported.

Q2: On a scale of zero (not at all) to ten (sufficiently), how safe do you think nuclear power generation is now? (Sample size=1,308)

Current safety level 2.81

The area that felt nuclear power was least safe was Shikoku at 2.18 points then Hokuriki at 2.35. Conversely the highest (or least low) safety rating was in the Hanshin area (Osaka and Kobe) at 3.41 points and Kyushu at 3.10. By sex men rated the safety higher.

Q3: On a scale of zero (rapid decommission) to ten (continue to promote as before), how do you think nuclear power generation should head in the future? (Sample size=1,308)

Hokkaido was most keen to quickly get rid of nuclear power at 2.78 points, then Shikoku at 3.23. Least keen was Hanshin at 4.03 points and Kinki at 3.75. By sex, females were about one point more keen to quickly get rind of nuclear power.
