Cheap Auto Insurance and Car Theft | law15.net

One of the most horrifying things that ever happened to me was when my car was stolen. I didn?t know exactly why, out of all the fantastic late model cars in my neighborhood, the thieves decided to take my fifteen year old Honda Accord. Maybe they just thought I was a jerk and wanted to force me to ride the bus to work. Who knows? All I can say, though, is that I learned a lot about insurance and car theft because of the incident.

If you?ve got comprehensive auto insurance coverage, you?re covered when it comes to auto theft. Several other coverage options can extend to theft as well, so it helps to inform yourself of your state?s rules and your insurer?s guidelines. Thankfully, my car was recovered and I even was reimbursed for the sound system that was stolen out of my dash. Not everybody is so lucky, though.

What was even more interesting, though, was the fact that my car?s make and model and year actually had one of the highest rates of theft. In California, the most stolen car is not an Escalade, Acura, or even a Volkswagen. It?s the 1989 Toyota Camry. Pretty insane, isn?t it? If you look at the most stolen car statistics in your state, you?ll almost always see mid ?90s cars on the list. Cheap ones at that. The second most stolen car in California is the 1991 Honda Accord. How much money are these thieves really making when they steal and sell these heaps?

I also learned that my state, California, was the state in which the most car thefts occurred. Actually, most of the Southwest and Pacific Northwest seemed to dominate the list. Phoenix was the town in which more auto thefts occurred than in any other place. Fresno, Modesto, and Stockton-Lodi (all three are in California) placed second, third, and fourth, respectively. Not a great showing for my home state but what can you do? Well, there is one thing: Make sure that your vehicle is covered for theft if you live in one of these high risk states, especially if many people are known for getting a DUI in your area. You might have to pay a higher premium but you?ll thank yourself in the long run if the unthinkable should occur.
