Balancing motherhood and career : Blueprint Newspaper

After WWII, the economic down turn and the depression that befell nations forced women into seeking job opportunities in the formal sector. Women, prior to this period were primarily concerned or limited to domestic or household chores. As soon as women ventured into the formal global workforce, the fortunes of the home front plunged to an all times high.

Virtues that bonded mater and child began to dwindle, as women appeared more attached to their professions than they were of their families. Then the fashion industry revolution came. The introduction of body enhancements and other iconic styles in dressing made women derail further in adapting to fashion trends.

News rules on keeping fit and trendy with fashion aggravated the situation even more to an extent now that it has become detrimental to the children as mothers massive opt out of so many traditional but healthy ways of child-mother relationships.

The first to become victim of the unreasonable trend is breastfeeding. Mothers choose to keep their breasts ?attractive and standing? and so children have to be fed with canned foods.

In our present world children no longer live on their mothers? breast milk, but rather they are constantly fed with all kinds and manners of canned baby foods, even when experts advise to the contrary.

Experts in the feed of pediatrics say that the benefits of breast milk cannot be equaled by any orthodox or unorthodox medicine, and with the growing number of issues associated with canned foods, fashion conscious mothers see pediatricians? recommendations as mere suggestions that at best can be ignored.

Child upbringing is generally not the responsibility of the mother alone, but it is also that of the father. However, there are aspects to it that rest squarely with the mother. Children are left in the hands of care givers at the tender ages of 3 months in most cases, as the mother cannot afford to take out time and cater for that child, and so is the father who is out there trying to make ends meet for the family. In view of this, children now grow with nannies, which have little or no professional qualifications in that field.

Career mothers cannot be stopped from attaining their life goals, but that could be done with maximum consideration of the kids raised by such families. Working parents are advised to seek professional advice on how to balance work and raising a family, especially the women. There are a few issues working mothers should note:

1. Every woman must understand that she is first a mother, and so, is responsible for the child?s welfare in the context of care and feeding, before her career. It is appalling to note that most women care less about their wards, their whole attention and focus is on nothing but career and the goals they set for themselves, providing little or no attention for the children they bear, as long as they have house helps or nannies at their disposal. This is dangerous to the entire life of the family.

2. Women are wives. Knowing and accepting the reality of being wives, should be an aspect in the life of a woman that is very prominent.? A woman who knows that she has a primary responsibility of mid-wifing the home will gladly take on house administration and management as a primary task before any career of her choice. It is pertinent to note also that women?s primary assignments in a home is not to work, but to compliment the ideas of her husband and also lend him a helping hand in other matters. She is ordinarily not expected to take on the task home building. That work is the husband?s.
