In early March, the York County Conservation District will release a 300-page wildlife reference book aimed at students in 3rd to 8th grades. The guide will include information, photos and drawings of Pennsylvania?s birds and mammals.
Kim Young, the Education and Communications Coordinator for the YCCD has been writing and editing the volume for the last three years. She hopes the guide will be the first of a series that will also feature Pennsylvania?s aquatics and forestry.
The idea for the reference series began as a need for the YCCD?s Envirothon participants. Envirothon is an environmental education competition designed to test a student?s knowledge of Pennsylvania?s natural resources. It has been held in York County for the last 26 years. The competitors range from third to 12th grade.
?Because we are one of just a few places to offer the Envirothon to students as young as third grade, we have trouble finding study materials for them,? said Young.
In an effort to engage students in the guidebook, Young accepted artwork and photography submissions from students across the country. The volume will include 300 to 400 submitted pieces of art.
?We wanted to make the book enticing to look at and give it a little charm,? said Young. ?This book will be used in schools and we wanted the younger kids to be able to relate more.?
Each chapter of the book is written for the sixth to eighth grade levels. The chapters are concluded with a summary that is aimed at third and fourth graders.
The reference was published with grant funds, and included in the agreement was a provision to donate a copy to every school library in the county, as well as every York County library branch and every Envirothon coach.
