Jones joined in 1994, after founding drummer Paul Hester quit the group. He stayed on until 1996, when the band split up, but did not return a decade later, when New Zealand-born frontman Neil Finn reunited the hit-making foursome.
"We remember him as a warm-hearted, funny and talented man, who was a valuable member of Crowded House," the band said in a statement. "He played with style and spirit. We salute him and send our love and best thoughts to his family and friends."
This is not the first time the group -- famous for the hits "Something So Strong" and "Don't Dream It's Over" -- has lost a drummer. In 2005, Paul Hester, the man Jones replaced, committed suicide following a bout with depression.
