Melissa Etheridge returns with a new tune ? Honolulu, Hawaii ...

The four years since Melissa Etheridge last performed in Honolulu, playing a sold-out concert in the Blaisdell Concert Hall, have been busy and productive for her. She?s performed at the Democratic National Convention, been featured in a breast cancer documentary, ?1 a Minute,? recorded and released three full-length CDs, and received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

She also finished work last month on a fourth album since that last Oahu performance, ?4th Street Feeling,? that she describes as ?the most of me that I?ve ever put on an album.?

?I play all the guitars, I play harmonica, I play keyboards, I sing, and then I got my drummer and my bass player ? Blair (Sinta) and Brett (Simons) ? who are backing me up. It?s just such a solid album. I?ve never had such a great time making an album,? Etheridge said, calling from Los Angeles.

The album is scheduled for release in September. The first single, ?Falling Up,? will be available Aug. 7 on iTunes.

Etheridge introduced it earlier this month in concert in Auckland, New Zealand, the first stop in a 10-show ?Fearless Love World Tour? of New Zealand and Australia.

Hawaii can expect to hear ?Falling Up? on Monday when Etheridge returns for a one-nighter in the Concert Hall ? and again when she plays the final show of the tour Tuesday on Maui.

Etheridge gave Honolulu its money?s worth and then some when she played the Blaisdell in 2008. She performed for three hours without intermission and included songs she was previewing for her next national tour. This time she?s ending a tour here and will take most of August off before going out again to support the new album.

?I put (the songs on the album) in a very specific order,? she says. ?Of course, after that I can?t force anybody to listen to it in order, but at least (for) those who know and want to, there is a definite order. If you get the CD, (the songs are) on that order, and if you download (the entire album) it?s in that order.?

As with all popular recording artists, much of Etheridge?s music is on YouTube. ?Falling Up? is already there courtesy of fan bootleg concert videos. (The song can also be heard at www.melissaetheridge. com.)

However, while the artist sometimes known as Prince has become famous (or infamous) for his refusal to allow most of his work to be posted on YouTube, Etheridge sees YouTube as beneficial.

?I like YouTube,? she said. ?I think YouTube is great. I think it?s honest, and that when something goes viral and gets a million hits you know that it?s what people want to watch. It?s not forced. It?s not what some (music industry) suit thought that you should see. I do like it very much.

?I don?t know any artist that really makes a ton of money on their record sales. ? My largest amount of money comes from my touring, with me in person, so it actually helps me. The more people know about me, the more ticket sales I can have. So as I look at, I?m still fine.?

Etheridge feels differently about reality television talent contests. Even when she was unknown, when someone told her that he could get her on ?Star Search,? it wasn?t something she was interested in.

?There?s a certain pop edge in singing other people?s songs that didn?t interest me, and there are still a lot of people who don?t (want to do that),? she said. ?I think there?s a line between the artistic vision and gift of the entertainer and songwriter, and then the entertainment of the Roman Colosseum version of how we look at music.?
