KILLEEN, Texas ? The capture of an AWOL soldier accused of plotting to attack Fort Hood is the latest example of how businesses are playing a crucial role in preventing terrorism.
A Texas gun shop clerk called police this week after Pfc. Naser Abdo acted suspiciously while buying smokeless gunpowder and other items. Abdo was arrested the next day with bomb-making material in his motel room.
It's the kind of tip authorities have been encouraging since the 9/11 attacks. Federal and local law enforcement agencies have established programs over the past decade that encourage the public to report suspicious activities.
Just five months ago, a shipping company tipped the FBI about a chemical explosive order, foiling a former college student's alleged plot to blow up former President George W. Bush's Dallas home.
