The popularity of vinyl house siding has grown a great deal in recent years. This is true, not only for the home renovation and restoration market but for new construction as well. In fact recent statistic show the 30 percent of all new homes being built in the US are using this product as there first choice for exterior wall covering. What is it about this product that makes it popular and what really is it? This building material like many others is made of polyvinyl chloride, commonly known in the construction industry as PVC. It is the same material the electrical and plumbing piping is made from. It has properties that allow the color to be present completely though the material making scratches almost unnoticeable. It is also virtually maintenance free requiring no more that a good hosing to keep it looking clean and fresh. Occasionally it may need a high pressure hose down or a little scrubbing with a brush to remove adhesive materials like bird droppings and web and mud nests from insects. Unlike aluminum it is dent resistant when struck by a falling branch or a wild pitch and should a section become damaged it is easy to replace.
This products popularity is also due to its consumer friendliness. It is readily available in countless different colors and grains and is very cost effective to purchase and install. There is no other product for such a minimal investment that adds so much curb appeal to the home and actually increases the value in most cases.
This type of siding lends it self well to all different climates and is a good barrier against rain, sleet, snow and wind. It also has insect repellent qualities not being as inviting as wood siding and it is also not as fast to burn. In the case of a fire vinyl will allow for greater escape time then will wood siding.
When selecting vinyl siding, look for a well known brand and choose a conservative pattern and color that will have appeal to the general population in case you decide to sell your home one day. Also be sure to select a pattern and color that is popular with the building trade so you can be sure it will be available in years to come. You may want to add on an addition or build a detached garage one day. It would be disappointing to not be able to match.
