ZANZIBAR (Reuters) ? At least 40 people were confirmed dead after a ferry capsized off the east African country of Tanzania as it made its way from Zanzibar to Pemba island, Minister of State Mohammed Aboud told reporters on Saturday.
Witnesses fear the death toll could rise sharply since the overcrowded ferry was carrying more than 500 passengers. Fishing boats and tour operators are scouring the sea for scores of people who are still missing.
