How To Blog: 6 Easy & Effective Tips For Retailers [Part 1]

With holiday shopping at the forefront of consumers? attention, knowing how to blog effectively can be a lucrative online marketing tactic for retailers of all shapes and sizes. When it comes to blogging for business, the benefits are pretty clear by now: share your knowledge of the industry, attract more followers, improve your organic search presence, and on and on and on.

Now the age old question ? what do I blog about and how can I turn my blog readers into shoppers?

As with anything else, there are some tips specifically for retailers that I?d like to share to aid in marketing (and selling) your products!

Whether you just added a new blog on your website or need a few tips to keep the blogging momentum going, here are some great topics that you can write about on your retail blog.

Let?s get started!

Show Off Your Merchandise

Exclusivity is a powerful psychological trigger- it gives people the sense that they are ahead of the curve and ?in the know?! Get customers to crave your latest shipment of goods by discussing the uniqueness of your new line-up.

Tease people with just a few of the hottest items, and then encourage them to visit your store to check out your other new pieces. Showcasing your new fall fashion line in a visual story board or just candid shots of you unwrapping the new goods will be enough to let your fans know you have new merchandise for them to drool over!

Storyboards are great for this. One of my favorite resources for creating storyboards is Polyvore. This nifty little tool lets you make stunning, polished storyboards to create an entire look with your apparel. In fact, you can use this tool to create a storyboard for just about anything: home d?cor, ensembles, cooking gadgets, paint colors, even tool kits (think the Fall Yard 101 kit -winterizer seed, lawn mower, etc.).

Example of a storyboard created with Polyvore

Always be mindful of the season: for the holidays, offer a printable holiday gift guide; for spring cleaning, offer a printable checklist branded with your logo. These are very easy to create, and very useful to your target audience.

Plus, you have just taken the guess work out of the chore, be it shopping for people on their Christmas list or doing the necessary home chores for spring cleaning.

Perhaps you have a shopping cart on your e-commerce site? If so, it can be worthwhile to include links for instant shopping gratification. You could even include a Blog Exclusive Promo code to track how much traffic is coming direct from the blog AND encourage repeat followers!

Highlight Industry Styles and Trends

For fashion boutiques and other retailers be sure to use your expertise and creative eye to discuss the latest trends. Use your blog to talk about the new fall trends, what is happening on the run-way, hot colors, etc.

Not everyone is blessed with an eye for fashion- it takes a creative-type to be able to say what top goes best with those new jeans. If you have that knowledge then don?t hesitate to share it with your audience- it?s a great way to communicate your understanding of how to match specific pieces of clothing, and make people look (and feel) their best!

If your tips are really helpful, it?s likely that your blog followers will eat that information up and share it with their social networking communities.

[Sharing content is critical for helping your message go viral. To enable easy content sharing we suggest adding AddThis.com or ShareThis.com to your blog immediately!]

Answer Common Customer Questions

Get your followers to engage with you. Ask them specifically what they think of the new trends, what they would like to see in your store, what brands they like/dislike and so on.

Remember, the conversation shouldn?t always be about you and your brand. It?s about becoming a trusted resource for your audience to turn to when they need help with an industry-related question.

Sometimes, all it takes is just to ask at the end of your post for comments! By doing so, you have now developed a relationship with your customer (or potential customer).

And when they comment, respond back! Thank them for their input, provide your feedback and BAM ? you?re on your way to forming a genuine relationship with your audience.

[If your blog platform makes your followers jump through 7 gates of hell to leave a comment on your posts, you definitely need a new comment tool. We recommend using Disqus- which is a simple plug-in that makes it easier for your followers to comment on your blog.]

Promote Events and Sales

This sounds like a no-brainer but?promoting your events and store sales is a great way to get people in the door ?even with short notice.

You could even run special events or discount days just for your blog followers, like a blogger meet-up for all your readers. Chances are, they will bring friends, and family with them too.

To increase sales, attract new customers, and retain current customers, many retail stores implement various sales promotion techniques. Make sure to let your customers know when you are running these sales and promotions.

Offer Giveaways or Contests

Run a post giving away something you sell in the store. Request that they comment in order for their chance to win and have them check back a few days later to see if they won! This will encourage excitement, interaction and repeated visits.

You can also use a tool?like Rafflecopter which you can embed right in your blog to easily set up a giveaway. Rafflecopter is neat too by providing additional entries if your subscribers share your content, retweet the contest, etc. It is fully customizable so you can pick and choose what other actions you want blog readers to do in order for additional entries.

Best of all ? it is free and easy to set up and track analytics!

Britons becoming more tolerant | Secular News Daily

A Yougov poll of 1,637 people shows that in several respects, Britain has become more tolerant and less prejudiced during the past four decades.

Compared with the 1970s, 81% now feel that there is less discrimination against homosexuals than there used to be, 79% less against black people, 78% less against women, and 64% less against Asians. Of secular groups, only ageism bucks the trend, with 33% saying that discrimination against the elderly has got worse over the years (albeit 6% fewer than those thinking it has decreased).

On the religion front, anti-Semitism is perceived to have abated, with 58% claiming there is less discrimination against Jews than in the 1970s, 7% more, and 25% about the same. However, Muslims, who had a relatively low public profile and were significantly less numerous four decades ago, have not been so fortunate, with 48% of all adults contending that they experience more discrimination, 33% less, and 11% a similar amount as before. Three-tenths also feel that discrimination against Christians has grown, and this is especially so among men (35%) and Conservative voters (41%). Equivalent proportions believe that discrimination against Christians has lessened (32%) or remained static (29%).

The survey also looked at the issue of racism in football.

Since 2007, workers? benefits have climbed faster than their pay, taking inflation out of the mix. A USA Today analysis found benefits accounted for nearly a fifth of total compensation last year.

Brandon Smith explains what?s going on and if this is the new normal.

Novel metabolic programs found driving aggressive brain tumors

ScienceDaily (Nov. 9, 2012) ? Researchers at Moffitt Cancer Center have identified metabolic signatures that may pave the way for personalized therapy in glioma, a type of tumor that starts in the brain.

The study appears online in the October issue of Cancer Research, a publication of the American Association for Cancer Research.

According to the authors, little has been known about the underlying metabolic alterations that may drive the growth of the most aggressive type of glioma, termed glioblastoma.

"For the first time, we have described global metabolomic signatures in glioma," said study corresponding author Prakash Chinnaiyan, M.D., an assistant member in Moffitt's Experimental Therapeutics Program. "This use of metabolomics, which is the global quantitative assessment of metabolites within a biological system, has enabled us to identify some of the central metabolic pathways that allow for these tumors to grow. Our findings provide a unique insight into the underlying biology of glioma and appear to have prognostic significance."

The metabolic studies were carried out at Metabolon Inc. of Durham, N.C., using a nontargeted platform that enabled quantitative analysis of a broad spectrum of molecules.

The established approach for both understanding and treating cancer has largely been genotype based. Unfortunately, clinical gains offered by this level of understanding have been limited, largely based on the complex nature of signaling pathways associated with tumor growth and the inability to delineate the key functional signaling pathways driving growth in an individual tumor.

Chinnaiyan added that although cancers have access to a variety of such pathways, there are a limited number of metabolic strategies they can employ.

"Simply put, with regards to tumor growth, there are several means to the same end. Rather than studying and targeting the means, tumor metabolism represents the end consequence of these aberrant signaling pathways," Chinnaiyan said.

More study will be required to determine the relative importance of these and other metabolic pathways in subtype designation and their overall influence on malignant glioma metabolism. The research team wrote "understanding the glioma metabolome offers the potential for several levels of clinical application, including the possibilities for prognostication and opportunities for personalizing treatment to an individual tumor's metabolic phenotype."

This research was supported by the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command, National Functional Genomics Center project (W81XWH-08-2-0101), the Ben and Catherine Ivy Foundation, and the American Cancer Society (RSG-11-029-01-CSM).

Internet Marketing Search Engine Optimization SEM SEO service ...

Optimizing your website can help dramatically, but there are right and wrong ways to go about it. To get in good with the readers and remain on great terms with the search engines, just follow the advice and tips below for your initial campaign.

Site maps go a long way towards increasing your traffic. This allows all of your pages to be linked together. People will see the links on the side of your website and it will boost the amount of traffic that you will get to your site.

A site map which has your keywords included should be created. A site map acts as a central hub that allows visitors to go to any page on your site with no hassle. Site maps are used by search engine bots to find and rank websites.

You must research your keywords before attempting to optimize your site. When you are building your site, find what keywords work for you. By researching certain keywords, you will be able to find out exactly what people search for in your category. By using relevant keywords, you can help increase your rank on search engines.

Incorporate keywords and phrases into HTML tags to improve your sites SEO. Search engines put the most weight on words in the title tag of the site. Focus on the most relevant keywords.

Once you have discovered the right key phrases for your website, you should put that key phrase in your title. The title will be the first impression visitors get of your website, so make it relevant and interesting. By having a more generic word in the title, searchers who aren?t aware of your company?s name will still visit your website to find what they are looking for.

Before you outsource your SEO, investigate the company thoroughly. Lots of SEO companies will charge too much for sub-standard work. Find out from customers how they did and read the reviews and see what they said. This can help you to avoid scam artists.

Get a domain name for your site that is both memorable and relevant. A memorable name is important, especially for people who find your content through social media sites.

Before you attempt to start incorporating search engine optimization techniques, you should set up web analytics. Purchase the analytics software so you can have it available to see the results of your online marketing tactics. With the analytics software, you?ll be able to see which attempts are successful and where you?ll want to tweak your plan.

Focus on becoming an expert in just one or two aspects of SEO right away. There are not enough minutes in a day to get a hold of every technique. You need to focus your understanding on just a few areas and master them fully.

Consider using a pay-per-click strategy as a good affiliate marketing tactic. This is the simplest affiliate program to implement, so the pay for each click may not be high, but the total pay can add up quickly.

To maximize the benefits from your SEO efforts, always review your server headers. Poor server headers will lead to less success. See to it that your server header has a ?200 Ok? status whenever you are redirecting.

Consider advertising products through podcasting. Podcasts are visual or audio recordings, or sometimes streamed live, that give the consumer important information on the topics you want to cover in the show. People seem to like podcasts because they can record them and listen to or watch them at their convenience. Descriptions of your podcasts, then appear to search engines.

You should make sure that you website is geared toward your target market and is utilizing your keywords effectively. Always add relevant articles and content that includes your main keywords. Your target keywords should appear anywhere and everywhere ? not just in the text itself but also in your links, tags and page titles.

If you want to increase your site?s page ranking, consider purchasing a previously used domain name. If a domain name is over two years old, it gets higher search engine rankings by default. Consider searching for domain names that have been recently dropped as possibilities for your site.

If you are managing a business website, encourage the CEO or the owner of the business to become involved online. This is what gives the company a voice, and will increase the interest of your users.

Content is the most important aspect of search engine optimization. Your content should always be original, well written, focused and not too long. Do not overlook the importance of proper spelling and grammar. You can go a long way in search engine optimization if you put good content on your website.

If your site serves a market or audience with established ezines, contribute articles and other information with backlinks to your site. The great thing about eZines are that they are archived, so even if your article is found months later, it can still have usable links back to your site.

Research all of the SEO companies and choose one to get the most out of your marketing efforts. This is when your site is marketed in a way that will bring it up to the top of search engine results. You can often find great deals on these services.

As was stated earlier in the article, there are good and bad ways to go about search engine optimization. By only utilizing proven techniques you ben improve your ranking without being blocked.

Why A Hearing Aid May Be Necessary

Music is soothing, energizing, magical, and all those great things that help you to transcend and get away in such a hectic world. You may listen to music in your vehicle, at your home, or in any other environment you can. When the music gets really good, you really feel it within and may be compelled to crank the volume louder! As the volume gets louder, your ears naturally adjust, and you enjoy the sound just as well. However, high levels of sound can actually be damaging. Wear and tear to the ear over the years can cause sound loss that is irreversible! When this happens, the next step would be to find the perfect hearing aid to help improve sound awareness.

Whether you are a party person who constantly attends loud concerts, or just a homebody who cranks up the volume loud on your personal earphones, blasting that music too loudly can surely be damaging. Especially if these things are done very frequently, There are certain risks. That music may sound spectacular, but imagine someday not being able to hear at all! This is what can happen as a result of exposing the ears to dangerous levels of sound. It is the damage to the hair cells within the ear that can cause temporary or permanent sound perception in individuals. Suffering this damage is never an easy thing, but you can always rely on the assistance of a hearing aid.

Without being able to hear, everyday tasks would be difficult. Imagine if your best friend came over to visit you. He or she rings the doorbell, but you are preoccupied and happen to not hear the doorbell. To you, this doorbell may sound like a small distant sound, and you may brush it off as just the television. But because you didn?t hear its loud chime, your friend assumes you are unavailable and leaves! What a different scenario that would be if only you could hear.

Some forms of sound loss simply come from the aging process. But there are still causes of auditory loss that can undoubtedly be prevented or avoided. One way is by keeping music at lower levels. This does not mean you have to keep your radio or MP3 player at inaudible levels, but do not raise the volume too high. Another way to avoid this exposure is to wear earplugs when necessary. Earplugs can help drown out a reasonable amount of sound volume. If you work at a noisy place like a construction site or concert venue, it may be best to use earplugs to protect your ears!

For those who are unfortunate and happen to suffer loss of sound in their ears, there is a solution. Purchasing a hearing aid is the best thing to do. These devices can amplify sound so that an individual?s sound perception can still be improved despite sound loss. This way, nobody really has to suffer the effects of ear damage for the rest of their lives. Until then, protect your ears! These things don?t have to happen to you at all!

There is a clear choice of inland empire, ca hearing aid specialists ready to suit locals? needs. Anyone in the area facing hearing issues should contact the professionals at http://www.miracle-ear-inlandempire.com for more information.

Self Improvement Times: Time Management Tips - UseA Quick Quiz ...

Time management tips can help you race around countless roadblocks that pop up. One of the trickiest obstacles you will encounter is Time Gremlins. They're very hard to see, so you may collide with them at full speed! They're particularly difficult to sidestep when you question whether they even exist.

In my experience, Time Gremlins are real. What is more, they hide out inside you at all times. You might envision them as voices of your time issues. You know you've encountered one when inner messages tangle your plans, sabotage your priorities, and ruin your pleasure in your time choices. Because they're not visible to you, their voices can often run riot, just below your consciousness. Unless, of course, you intercept them.

To neutralize each one, plan to take many small steps over time. As you become skilled in battling Time Gremlins, you'll be very pleased with the results! So let's begin:

Getting to Know Your Time Gremlins:

Your Time Gremlins occupy your blind spots. Any unexamined idea about time that you've believed since childhood provides a fertile breeding ground. So does wishful thinking. And their effect is universal. They steal your power from you! Worst of all, they feel like they're outside your control (although or course they are not.)

Here's a simple quiz to recognize these enemies of your time:

Quiz: How Do Gremlins Steal Your Time?

Pick the question that resonates most, and fill in the blank:

Question #1: What's blocking your path?

Answer: ________ keeps me from doing what I need to do.

Question #2: What never gets done?

Answer: I never get around to _________________________.

Question #3: What time traits do you judge in yourself?

Answer: I judge myself as being ______________________.

Question #4: What excuses do you fall back on when plans fall apart?

Answer: I would get everything taken care of, if only _______________.

Write down the statement you completed that affects you the most strongly. Then ask yourself the following question:

What can you do to stand in your power and change this statement?

Relax, close your eyes, and envision yourself living a dynamic new life script. Feel it down to your toes. Describe it in one or two sentences. Identify one gain!

Remember, with every loss there is a gain. And with every gain there is a loss. Weigh the price for more power over your time. Accepting this is the key to your freedom!

You are standing at an important crossroads.

Are you willing to weather the losses that come with important gains? By consciously committing to go the distance, you gain enormous strength to keep setbacks in perspective with what you will be giving yourself.

Now, how will you set limits on your Time Gremlins today?

Fixed Blade Knife Options - The Pack Knife

While there are many choices when it comes to a fixed blade, not many present themselves as a viable option for EDC (everyday carry). Their size and bulk along with normally lengthy blades are just not well-suited for EDC purposes on an everyday basis. This is where what is sometimes referred to as a ?pack knife? can play an important role. Think of a pack knife as a sort of knife insurance. Having a few pack knifes will assure that you always have a fixed blade handy. I normally consider a pack knife as something that is used to prevent damage to a good knife when the need presents itself. It should also be cheap and inexpensive. And because it is usually a cheap knife, it?s also one that can be put in a pack and forgotten about until it?s needed. A good pack knife will usually be a short (4 to 5 inch), full tang fixed blade and usually be one with a cord-wrapped handle. This is what you will use as a screwdriver or to pry, hammer or chop with in order to prevent needless damage to one of your better blades. It also won?t be the end of the world (or your budget) if it gets broken or lost.? An inexpensive fixed blade with a full tang of moderate length that is kept tucked away in your various packs can help prevent the needless risk to your good blades by ?inappropriate? use. Staying above the water line!

'Twilight' star Lautner keeps his shirt on, kind of

By Randee Dawn, TODAY contributor

Give the audience what they want, as they say. And when Taylor Lautner visited TODAY Friday, the screaming hordes of young women outside got exactly that -- Lautner's well-defined chest and abs, as Savannah Guthrie showed stills of him, shirtless, throughout the "Twilight Saga" years.

"I didn't know you were talking literally my 'body' of work," he chuckled after seeing the pictures. And, he confirms: He does get a shirt in the finale.

The finale being "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn: Part 2," which opens in theaters Nov. 16. It's the end of an era for Lautner and his co-stars, who have spent the last five years of their lives inhabiting the characters and making the films.?

Still, as the series comes to a close, he admits that the love triangle between his character and the vampires Bella and Edward has taken a slightly odd turn: Lautner's Jacob develops an instant, close affinity to their daughter Renesmee. But he had to get assurance that it wasn't creepy.

"I wish I could (explain it)," he said. "The best person to ask would be Stephanie Meyer, the author of the books, and trust me, I asked her for explanations quite a bit. ... She's like, 'Look, Taylor, stop trying to overcomplicate it, it's a lifelong bond between two people and that's it.'"

However the story goes, Lautner says he's having a hard time grasping that it's nearly over.?"It's nuts to me that it's coming to a close, because I remember when we were just beginning, I was saying, man, this is gonna go on forever," he said. "It's been some of the most amazing years of my life."

Skyfall Movie Review

In Skyfall, there's a lot of suggestion that James Bond may be getting too old for this stuff, but as I watched Daniel Craig nail all the stunts while looking more stylish than ever, it was clear that the Bond franchise has never been fresher. This time, Bond takes on the villain Silva (Javier Bardem), a terrorist whose weapon is technology. When Silva releases top-secret information about Britain's undercover spies and goes after M (Judi Dench), it triggers Bond into action ? and we're rewarded with seeing the superspy in all his sexy, suited-up glory.

Skyfall works because it blends both the old and the new Bond elements so well. It's safe to say that this success is from the touch of first-time Bond director Sam Mendes, who integrates those classic elements (the familiar theme swells at opportune moments and the stylized intro is both cool and old-school). And while Bond's badassness disproves his obsolescence, the new elements, like some cast members, liven things up too. There's Bond's young new gadget-guy, Q, played with charming wit by Ben Whishaw, and Ralph Fiennes makes his debut as the new head of the Secret Service. But this movie is still all about Bond, and with his third film, Craig is more comfortable ? and better ? than ever.

To find out what else I thought, just keep reading.

Skyfall is high in energy, starting with the action sequences. They range in description from wildly impressive (Bond leaps on and off trains) to just plain bonkers (he uses a Gila monster as a boost), but they're all so much fun. Even when they're silly, you accept it because this is James Bond. He can do whatever he wants, especially when he pulls everything off with such flair (I will never get tired of seeing Craig adjust a cufflink or tie after some death-defying feat). And there's the added bonus that Craig can make those Bond one-liners sound smooth rather than cheesy.

Then there's Bardem as Silva, a villain who recalls the campiness of the most outrageous Bond nemeses. He swaggers around Bond in his foppish ensembles, spiritedly delivering his lines as the movie's comic relief. He may not strike fear into your heart, but he's certainly entertaining (and that blond dye job is worth it to nudge his character right over the top). Silva's antagonism is somewhat unique, though; yes, he has the usual evil agenda with disastrous consequences, but the greater danger is in Silva's narrowed target: M. This makes things personal for Bond, a man who's decidedly not into getting very personal.

It's a good thing that we get to see a relationship dynamic between M and Bond, because the other ladies of the film (Naomi Harris and B?r?nice Marlohe) aren't tasked with much. I know that Bond girls rarely have a ton of substance, but the minimal character or romantic development for either of the women is the one thing Skyfall is missing. The ladies also don't have much dimension to speak of either, but they do look pretty. Not that they're prettier than Daniel Craig. That's just an impossible mission.

What a night last night was....good grief! : Dissociative Identity ...

I think prevention tactics would be your best bet, at least until communication with her improves.

Prevention tactics to try:
-- Talking or writing to everyone about every change beforehand. Even if it's last minute, try to take some time to yourself to just sort of "talk" yourself through what's going on, where you're going to be, stuff like that. Any little bit helps.
-- Reminding yourself and others what topics may be brought up/talked about; talking about calming techniques, warning signs they can give you if something's going too far, maybe making compromises on what is and isn't ok to talk about, stuff like that.
-- Using calming/relaxation techniques on yourself so that others inside may be less triggered. Deep breathing, counting to 10, stepping out for fresh air, stuff like that can all help.
-- Expressing your feelings and thoughts somehow so they're not trapped inside. Sometimes it can help to just get it out of your system. Keep a journal with you, or type notes on a phone or laptop, or something. Have something that you can write in about how to feel and what you're thinking- the expression and venting can help keep it from feeling overwhelming.
-- Using self-talk to help both yourself and others inside. This can be done out loud or inside your head. Remind yourself that you're safe, you're ok, everyone's safe, you're not in the past, and other such things. Remind yourself to breathe calmly and deeply if needed. Tell yourself repeatedly that you're ok, everything's ok and everyone's ok, and to just breathe and relax. Remind yourself consciously to relax any muscles you find yourself tightening, like if you realize you're legs or arms are tensing up or something. Use this even with something seems like it's getting to be too much. Remind yourself to calm down, to think clearly, and that it's ok to be scared but you have to try and stay as calm as possible, stuff like that. Talk through everything that you're doing or want to do- like for going in and waking up our sister. Talk yourself through it, be like "Ok, it's ok. I'm ok. Just breathe deeply. I'm going in to wake her up and it'll all be ok. I'm going to wake her up and let her know that something's wrong, and it'll all be ok. Just stay calm", that sort of stuff.

Remember: just because it doesn't seem like they can hear you, doesn't mean they can't. Self-talk can really help to not only reassure yourself, but reassure anyone inside who's being triggered or is upset or something, and it can help prevent switches sometimes because it helps to calm insiders before they get fully triggered out.

Improving Communication:
-- Talking to/with her consistently and often, even if it seems she can't hear you or doesn't reply. (A simple question of "How are you?" everyday can even help).
-- Writing to her. Sometimes, writing is a better form of communication for alters than verbal communication. This way, she can get back to you on her own time, and it might not be as hard as trying to be on the same "wave length" as you for (immediate) verbal communication.
-- Meditation. This can really help clear your mind and help make you more aware of things inside, which can help build awareness overall and can improve communication.
-- Relaxation/Calming techniques before attempting communication. With littles especially, it can help a great deal to make yourself feel as safe, relaxed, and comfortable as possible before attempting to communicate with them. Surround yourself with safe items like pillows and stuffed animals, maybe eat a comfort snack, listen to some happy/relaxing music, watch a funny/kids movie, have on comfy clothes, etc. The better you feel, the more relaxed and open your mind will be, which can help improve communication and can also help your little to feel better.

I think that's all I can think of, really. I hope some of this helps, and I'm sorry your night was so rough. Definitely treat yourself in some way today, like have a favorite dessert or something!

Why nicotine in cigarettes can relieve anxiety in smokers

ScienceDaily (Nov. 8, 2012) ? Preclinical data suggests inactivation of a specific sub-class of nicotinic receptors may be an effective strategy to help smokers quit without feeling anxious, according to Virginia Commonwealth University researchers.

These findings could one day point researchers to the development of novel therapies to help smokers quit without feeling anxious.

Smokers use cigarettes for many reasons, but many report that they smoke to relieve anxiety, despite the health danger of cigarette smoking. Researchers are now working to understand the underlying neurochemical pathways that support smoking behavior.

In a study, published online this week in PLoS ONE, researchers observed that low doses of nicotine and a nicotinic receptor blocker had similar effects to reduce anxiety-like behavior in an animal model. They found that inactivation of beta2 subunit, a specific sub-class of nicotinic receptors that bind nicotine, appears to reduce anxiety. This is different from the mechanism that regulates nicotine reward and likely occurs in a separate brain area.

"This work is unique because it suggests that nicotine may be acting through inactivation, rather than activation, of the high affinity nicotinic receptors," said Darlene Brunzell, Ph.D., assistant professor in the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology in the VCU School of Medicine.

"Nicotine acts like a key that unlocks nicotine receptors in the brain. Usually that key opens the receptor, but at other times nicotine is like a key that has gotten broken inside of the lock. Our findings suggest that low-dose nicotine may block a specific subtype of receptor from opening that is important for regulating anxiety behavior," she said, adding that anxiety is a major reason why people relapse to smoking.

Brunzell and colleagues are conducting ongoing studies that they hope will help to identify which brain areas regulate the anxiolytic effects of nicotine. Using genetic strategies, they are attempting to determine the specific molecular make-up of the nicotinic receptors that regulate anxiety.

According to Brunzell, from a therapeutic perspective it will be important to discover if blocking beta2 subunit containing nicotinic receptors relieves anxiety in smokers.

"Understanding what other subunits combine with beta2 to form the critical receptors that regulate anxiety could lead to selective therapeutics with fewer side effects," she said.

Kids need at least seven minutes a day of 'vigorous' physical activity, but most aren't getting that

ScienceDaily (Nov. 9, 2012) ? Children need a minimum of seven minutes a day of vigorous physical activity, demonstrates recently published findings by University of Alberta medical researchers and their colleagues across Canada.

"If you watch late-night television, or look in the backs of magazines, you'll see magical ads saying you need just 10 minutes a day or five minutes a day of exercise to stay fit. And for those of us in the medical field, we just rolled our eyes at that. But surprisingly, they may actually be right and that's what this research shows," says co-principal investigator Richard Lewanczuk, a researcher with the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry at the U of A.

"Our research showed children don't need a lot of intense physical activity to get the health benefits of exercise -- seven minutes or more of vigorous physical activity was all that was required. But the seven minutes had to be intense to prevent weight gain, obesity and its adverse health consequences. And most kids weren't getting that."

Lewanczuk worked on this study with Jonathan McGavock, his co-principal investigator, and former post-doctoral fellow, who now works with the Manitoba Institute of Child Health. They collaborated with Black Gold Regional Schools in Leduc and surrounding communities just south of Edmonton, as well as researchers from the University of Manitoba, Queen's University, the University of Newcastle, and U of A researchers from the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, the School of Public Health, Physical Education and Recreation, and Agricultural, Life and Environmental Sciences. The team's findings were recently published in the peer-reviewed journal Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine.

More than 600 children, between the ages of nine to 17 from Leduc and surrounding areas, wore monitors that tracked their physical activity levels for seven days. These children also had their weight, waist circumference and blood pressure regularly monitored.

Researchers reviewed the data collected through the Healthy Hearts program via Black Gold Regional Schools and determined the children spent almost 70 per cent of their time doing sedentary activities; nearly 23 per cent was devoted to light physical activity; almost seven per cent to moderate physical activity and 0.6 per cent to vigorous physical activity.

Overall, boys were less sedentary than girls. And the more vigorous the physical activity, the less apt the children were to be overweight. Children who were overweight had improved fitness levels and shrinking waist lines when they increased the amount of time spent doing vigorous activities.

Lewanczuk said the team made some other notable findings including the following: there weren't the expected health benefits from doing only mild or moderate activity even if the time spent doing this type of activity increased. What seemed to be critical was taking part in intense physical activity. For kids who took part in vigorous physical activity that lasted longer than seven minutes, their health benefits were significantly better. And the whole notion of being overweight but fit? The team's data didn't support that finding in children. If children were overweight, they were also unhealthy, Lewanczuk says.

"This research tells us that a brisk walk isn't good enough," says Lewanczuk, a professor in the Department of Medicine who has been studying this topic for eight years. "Kids have to get out and do a high-intensity activity in addition to maintaining a background of mild to moderate activity. There's a strong correlation between obesity, fitness and activity. Activity and fitness is linked to a reduction in obesity and good health outcomes."

Getting young children to make vigorous physical activity part of their daily routines is important, especially considering activity levels in the teenage years drop right off, Lewanczuk says. And previously published research from the same group of children shows kids are more active at school than they are at home.

"Quite often the activity levels on evenings or weekends would be almost flat," he says. "We made the presumption that kids were just sitting in front of a screen the whole time."

Lewanczuk hopes the research findings will help schools decide what type of mandatory physical activity is needed.

He praised the school district involved in the study, noting the research wouldn't have been possible without its support.

Paul Wozny with Black Gold Regional Schools said physical activity is always worthwhile and noted that increased moderate to intense activity was closely associated with lower weights from year to year. He said the Healthy Hearts project has truly created "a school and community culture where regular physical activity and healthy nutrition are seen as essential ingredients for students' health, wellness and life-long learning. Everyone is involved -- students, their parents, teachers, staff, researchers and the community as a whole.

"We are always striving to improve, so we regularly review the research results to help us fine tune and develop future activity and wellness programming at all of our school communities. Black Gold Regional Schools' Health Hearts project has received both national and international recognition as a world-leading school and community initiative dedicated to the improvement of student cardiovascular health through regular physical activity and multi-stakeholder support."

The primary funders of the research were: the Canadian Diabetes Association and the Alberta Centre for Child, Family and Community Research.

"The Canadian Diabetes Association is proud to be a leading supporter of diabetes research in Canada, investing more than $7 million annually in diabetes research," said Janet Hux, chief scientific advisor for the Canadian Diabetes Association. "The Association encourages Canadians to pursue healthy lifestyles in order to prevent and manage diabetes. Dr. Lewanczuk's work provides important new insights that may make enhanced activity more feasible for children and youth."

The Alberta Centre for Child, Family and Community Research added: "Having this kind of evidence should make it easier for parents, schools and daycare programs to do activities with children that will help develop lifelong healthy attitudes towards exercise and activity," stated Alberta Centre for Child, Family and Community Research President and CEO, Robyn Blackadar.

(AP) ? The worst of Europe's financial crisis appears to be over.

European leaders have taken steps to ease the panic that has plagued the region for three turbulent years. Financial markets are no longer in a state of emergency over Europe's high government debts and weak banks. And this gives politicians from the 17 countries that use the euro breathing room to fix their remaining problems.

Threats remain in Greece and Spain, and Europe's economy is forecast to get worse before it gets better. But an imminent breakup of the euro now seems unlikely, analysts say.

"We are probably well beyond the worst," says Holger Schmieding, chief economist at Berenberg Bank in London. He says occasional flare-ups in financial markets are likely, but "coming waves of turmoil will be less severe."

Evidence that Europe has turned a corner can be found in countries' falling borrowing costs, rising stock markets and a slow but steady stabilization of the region's banking system:

? The interest rates investors are demanding to lend to struggling countries such as Spain and Italy have plunged ? a sign that investors are less fearful about defaults. Spain's two-year bonds carry an interest rate, or yield, of just under 3 percent ? down from a July 24 peak of 6.6 percent. Italy's bond yields have dropped just as sharply.

? The Stoxx 50 index of leading European shares has surged 26 percent since June 1, while the euro has risen from $1.26 to $1.29 over the same period.

? After months of withdrawals, deposits are trickling back into Greek and Spanish banks, signaling that fears of their imminent financial collapse are abating. And U.S. money market mutual funds loaned 16 percent more to eurozone banks in September. That was the third straight monthly increase in short-term funding to European banks, and follows a 70 percent reduction since May 2011.

More proof the crisis is easing: Gatherings of European financial ministers no longer cause global stock and bond markets to gyrate with every sign of progress or a setback.

As financial-market panic recedes, euro leaders have more time to try to fix the flaws in their currency union. Among the challenges are reducing regulations and other costs for businesses in order to stimulate economic growth, and imposing more centralized authority over budgets to prevent countries from ever again spending beyond their means. That's important because a major cause of the crisis was Greece's overspending during the calm years after the euro's introduction in 1999, and Italy's failure to cut the high levels of debt it joined with. Other governments ? such as Spain and Ireland ? were saddled with debt piled up by banks and real estate developers during boom years.

Much of the credit for easing Europe's financial crisis goes to the European Central Bank, which has become more aggressive over the past year under the leadership of Mario Draghi.

The ECB said Sept. 6 that it was willing to buy unlimited amounts of government bonds issued by countries struggling to pay their debts. The ECB's pledge instantly lowered borrowing costs for Spain and Italy, which earlier in the year had faced the same kinds of financial pressures that forced Ireland, Greece and Spain to seek bailouts.

"Financial market confidence has visibly improved," Draghi said Thursday during a press conference.

The ECB's actions are reminiscent of some of the emergency steps the Federal Reserve took after the U.S. financial crisis struck in 2007. The Fed offered banks cheap loans, cut short-term interest rates to record lows and started buying bonds to ease long-term borrowing rates and boost the confidence of consumers and businesses.

The Fed couldn't prevent the United States from enduring its worst recession since the Great Depression. But its actions defused panic in the financial markets and helped restore the health of U.S. banks.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has helped ease financial tensions across the region by speaking more forcefully about the need to hold the euro together.

Merkel's support is critical because Germany, the eurozone's largest economy, has the most at stake financially in any bailouts. Merkel has backed the ECB's bond-buying plan and has made conciliatory statements toward Greece.

That has paved the way for the so-called troika of international lenders ? the ECB, the European Union and the International Monetary Fund ? to allow Greece more time to meet deficit-reduction targets. The Greek Parliament took a big step Wednesday toward securing its next batch of rescue loans from the troika by approving a new round of tax hikes and spending cuts.

Another key breakthrough in the financial crisis came in late June, when leaders meeting in Brussels took new steps to steady banks and governments. They agreed to ease up somewhat on austerity demands; to use bailout funds to buy government bonds and help ailing banks; and to create a single supervisor for all of Europe's banks.

Some analysts worry that as the financial pressure eases Europe's leaders could lose their recent momentum.

A breakup of the euro "is still possible," says Marie Diron, senior economic adviser to Ernst & Young. "I don't think we have removed the risk altogether."

Europe's leaders have big challenges left.

The most pressing is saving Greece. If the country was forced into a default and began printing its own currency, investors would assume other countries might go next and begin pulling their money out of those countries too, or demand higher returns to keep it there. The coming months could severely test Germany's new willingness to help. Despite two bailouts totaling ?240 billion ($311.3 billion) since 2010, Greece needs an estimated ?30 billion more from the other eurozone countries as its economy shrinks.

Berenberg's Schmieding thinks there's a 25 percent chance that Greece will leave the euro in the next six months, if its parliament balks at painful austerity measures and euro members are reluctant to provide more help. But he thinks a Greek departure would cause "only temporary damage." Other economists think it could break up the euro.

Another hotspot is Spain, the eurozone's fourth-largest economy. The country's debts are piling higher as its regional governments struggle and its economy shrinks. The ECB's offer two months ago to buy unlimited amounts of government bonds is a potential life-saver, but the country's Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy needs to formally request such aid. He has held off, apparently hoping the current market calm will last and he won't suffer the political humiliation of taking a bailout. Analysts say that if he waits too long Spain's borrowing costs could rise again to unsustainable levels and reignite broader fears in financial markets.

Banks are another problem. Weakened by massive losses on the government bonds they bought and real estate loans that aren't being repaid, banks across the eurozone have been propped up by governments that are themselves struggling financially. Even with the help, these banks have been forced to reduce lending, which has hurt Europe's economy.

A banking supervisor for all of Europe could provide some relief, by forcing crippled banks to merge with healthier ones. But it will be the second half of next year, at the earliest, before the supervisor is in place, banking analysts say. European leaders disagree over how much authority to give the supervisor and how to fund it.

Economic growth is what would ultimately end Europe's crisis. But robust growth remains far off. The European Union forecast Wednesday that the 17-nation eurozone economy would grow just 0.1 percent in 2013.

Privately, European officials say the ECB's bond-buying plan has afforded them a crucial window of opportunity ? a year, perhaps ? to resolve their biggest challenges.

Much depends, they say, on what gets accomplished in that time.
