Solazyme shares jump 15% on first day of trading | Easy Money ...

Solazyme Inc., the developer of oil products from genetically modified algae, jumped 15 percent in its first day of trading on increasing demand for renewable sources of fuel and specialty chemicals.

The company rose $2.71 to close at $20.71 on the Nasdaq Stock Market, after being priced late Thursday at $18. The South San Francisco company sold 10.975 million shares, raising $197.6 million, according to a regulatory filing.

The demand validates the technology used to convert organic material into biofuels and specialty chemicals, said Pavel Molchanov, an analyst for Raymond James & Associates Inc.

?The science in their process works,? Molchanov said Friday in a telephone interview.

A key question, he said, is whether Solazyme, or rivals that are developing similar products such as Emeryville?s Amyris Inc. and Gevo Inc., can do so cost-effectively. ?As we think about the risk factors that investors in these companies have to confront, it?s not a science risk. It?s how successfully can they scale up to be a large production business.?

Gevo, of Englewood, Colo., has climbed 32 percent since its February IPO, and Amyris has gained 83 percent since its September offering. Molchanov has ?outperform? ratings on Amyris and Gevo.

?Jury is still out?

John Benemann, founder of the biofuels consulting company Benemann Associates, said the business case for producing biofuels is less certain than for selling specialty chemicals.

?The jury is still out in terms of the scale-up of these systems? for fuels production, he said in a telephone interview. ?I?m very supportive of Solazyme, but it?s a fair question to ask from a fuels perspective, are we there yet? I think for other products, yes, absolutely, I think that they will do very well,? said Benemann, who studied the use of algae for making diesel fuel from 1978 to 1995 under the U.S. Energy Department?s Aquatic Species Program.

Molchanov said prices for biofuels are typically about $3 to $4 per gallon, compared with specialty chemicals, which generally start at $5 and reach $20 or more for products used in cosmetics and perfumes.

Solazyme genetically modifies algae capable of growing in fermentation tanks without sunlight, so they will make specific carbon compounds after consuming plant-based sugars or nutrients such as phosphorus. That differs from other companies that are developing algae that relies on photosynthesis in ponds or outdoor translucent containers.

Solazyme?s algae produce oils that can be extracted and converted into skin-care products, food supplements, fuels and chemicals. ?We tailor the composition of our oils to address specific customer requirements,? the company said in its regulatory filing.

The company began producing the renewable oils in 2007 with contract manufacturing partners in California and Pennsylvania, and has begun to form partnerships and joint ventures with other companies that will contribute all or some of the capital to build manufacturing facilities.

Roquette Freres SA agreed to fully fund a venture with Solazyme to create nutritional products, according to the filing. Bunge Ltd., one of the largest sugar-cane processors in Brazil, agreed May 4 to use Solazyme?s technology at one of its mills, and set a goal of producing 100,000 metric tons of the oil a year beginning in 2013.

Plant purchase

Solazyme said Wednesday that it purchased its first plant, a biorefinery in Peoria, Ill., that will produce 528,000 gallons of oil a year. The project is funded in part by a $22 million grant awarded by the Energy Department in 2009.

Solazyme is also working to expand production with Chevron Corp. of San Ramon, Dow Chemical Co., Unilever PLC, and Ecopetrol SA, Colombia?s largest oil company. Qantas Airlines Ltd. is evaluating Solazyme?s jet fuel, and the U.S. military has tested marine diesel and jet fuel derived from its algal oils.

This "joint" as you call it is the neutral/ground bond, or "main bonding jumper", and is what gives you the safety ground for circuits and feeders. This safety ground does NOT come from ground rods or other electrodes.

In this old house, these is no separate ground network. The ground rod connects to the meter base neutral and to neutral conductors (via a wire nut) in a junction box. One ungrounded duplex apparently was replaced with a grounded receptable and the ground is simply connected to the neutral conductor. A wire from the well pipe is also connected to the water heater frame and to neutrals in a nearby juction box (via a wire nut). I suspect there are other boxes where neutrals are bonded to box metal. In the main panel, some neutrals go to the a bar that bonds to the panel. One neutral is connected to panel itself -- so panel metal is part of the conducting path back to the PoCo neutral. I propose to replace the main panel, connect the ground rod and well pipe only to the main panel, and to provide a separate safety ground to a few receptacles and main junction boxes -- until I get around to rewiring everything. My question is how unsafe is the present hodge-podge of grounded neutrals and what can go wrong if some boxes (receptacles, lights) and conduits are bonded to neutrals? Thanks, Daneel

Join Date: Nov 2007 Location: Nashua, NH, USA Posts: 3,712	For 100 amp or smaller service run a #6 copper ground wire non-stop from the first main disconnect breaker of switch's box where neutral and ground are tied together, to the ground rod. Run a #6 ground from the water pipe to the closest point on the former items. For larger services run a #4 ground wire from the pipe to the panel (may be spliced) and a #6 non-stop from the ground rod to the panel. Separate neutrals from grounds everywhere downstream of the main disconnect. You can temporarily run separate ground wires from selected receptacles to the panel or to the nearest point on one of the fat ground wires mentioned previously. Ground fault circuit interrupters will work if the circuit or receptacles are not grounded. Now if I were compelled to put in a new main disconnect upstream of, say at the meter, what had been my main disconnect, say the top breaker in my panel, then I would be mighty tempted to make no changes in the latter panel or the cable going to it, assuming I was not upgrading there. __________________ Tornado victims: Do not rush to rebuild. The Return Of 'Crows,' Huxley's Children's Tale

High above the ground in the branches of a cottonwood tree near the town of Pearblossom, there once lived a mother crow and a father crow ? or at least the pair aspired to be parents. But a crafty snake, who lived at the bottom of the tree, showed up like clockwork every day with other plans for their eggs.

Thus goes the story of The Crows of Pearblossom, a children's book by Aldous Huxley, the novelist known to generations of high school English students as the author of Brave New World.

Huxley wrote the book in 1944 as a Christmas gift for his young niece, Olivia, who often came to stay with him and his wife at their home in the Mojave Desert. It was his first and only children's story.

After being out of print for years, The Crows of Pearblossom has recently been re-issued with new illustrations by artist Sophie Blackall. And although the story may not be for the faint of heart, the book does have a happy ending.

Daniel Pinkwater, Weekend Edition Saturday's ambassador to the world of children's literature, joins NPR's Scott Simon to discuss Huxley's book.

A furious Lewis Hamilton^[1] criticised the stewards after being penalised during the Monaco Grand Prix for colliding with Felipe Massa.

Hamilton is also under investigation for a later collision with Pastor Maldonado^[2].

Hamilton said afterwards: ?Out of six races I?ve been to the stewards five times. It?s a joke. It?s an absolute fricking joke.

?You know you can?t overtake here. Very, very rarely do you get an opportunity.

?I was quite a lot quicker than Massa, I went up the inside and the guy just turned so early and just turned into me so I tried to go onto the kerb to avoid him, and we?re stuck together.

?So it was just? and of course I get a penalty which is usual. He held me up in qualifying and I got the penalty. He turned into me, and I got the penalty.

?And I went up the inside of Maldonado and you can see on the screen he turned in a good car length too early to stop me from overtaking him and crashed into me. This stuff?s ridiculous. These drivers are absolutely fricking ridiculous, it?s stupid.?

Asked why he has had so many penalties he joked: ?Maybe it?s because I?m black ? that?s what Ali G says! I don?t know.?

He denied it was affecting his driving: ?No, it?s not affecting my confidence as a driver.

?I just think the sport is? you know, people want to see my racing, they want to see overtaking, and you get done for trying to overtake, trying to put on a show. I?m trying to make a move.

?Fair play if I really feel I?ve just gone too late and hit someone, I put my hand up and realise, OK, I really have caused an incident and been the stupid one, but it?s not the case.

?I?ll just try to keep my mouth shut and enjoy the rest of the season which, I?m sure, is going to be an interesting one, but as you can see he?s walking away with it.?

He denied the result has ended his championship chances, saying: ?No, it?s never too late, but it?s not looking great.

?I gave it my all today and the team did a great job to get the car back out and get it fixed for the last few laps.?

Update: Martin Whitmarsh says Hamilton has spoken to the stewards following his outburst: ?Immediately after the race he was very down, and during a post-race TV interview he made a poor joke about his penalties that referenced Ali G.

?However, I?m pleased to say that he chose to return to the track a little while later to speak to the stewards about the joke. They accepted his explanation.?
