The application deadline is approaching for area student musicians who might benefit from working with professionals in a new, free summer program.

The pilot educational program, launched by the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, the Grammy Museum and the Sprint Center, will connect college and high school students with Grammy-level artists representing multiple musical styles. Students will participate in an intensive four-week curriculum including instruction, mentoring and rehearsals at the Kauffman and Sprint centers. ?This project helps us get kids onstage in a unique way, and it?s an opportunity they otherwise wouldn?t get,? said Kauffman Center president and CEO Jane Chu. The program will begin June 18 and culminate with a formal concert in July.Local high school and college students can apply by April 15 (a full list of qualifications is available at GrammyMuseum.org). Interested students should have basic performing skills as well as experience in composing or songwriting. Applicants must be able to demonstrate their passion for music and plans to pursue a music career. Students should complete the application form and include a personal statement plus a letter of reference from a teacher or administrator. Students must also prepare a short video or audio clip of their performance. In this first year of the program, all applicants must live in the greater Kansas City area, but as the program grows, organizers will consider applications from around the country and internationally.?The enthusiasm, passion and commitment of the music and arts community throughout the region made Kansas City the obvious choice to host this program,? the Grammy Museum?s executive director, Bob Santelli, said in a statement. Application forms and additional information can be found by visiting the websites for the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, the Sprint Center or the Grammy Museum.
