FAQ: withdrawing from 401k for stocks?

hello i am 21 with 13k in my 401k most of it is in 2040 retirement fund. my question is show i take out about 4k to start investing in stocks and 1k to invest in a 5 yr cd. I understand that as of right now i am ahead of the game, but i would like to have a stock option that pays dividends. i have been watching sprint, gold,silver, barrels of oil.

my question is should i use a online company like share builder or Trade, should i go in to one of there offices and Speak with some one. i am a little scared that because i dint no what to look for or what i am trying to do that some one will take advantage of me and my money. if that?s not the route should i meet with a broker. if i meet with a broker, how do the broker make there money. i would like to get a wide range of stocks and be will verse with the 4k i will be investing.

maybe taking out of my 401k is not best. may be i should just hold what i currently have in my 401k and start investing out of pocket. what i would like is a return that will grow faster then my 401.

As others advised you earlier you CAN NOT do this while remaining employed. You have misunderstood your plan.

You could take a loan out but you pay interest on the loan which defeats what you are trying to do. Leave the 401k invested as it is or increase your equity stake in your 401k investments. If you want to invest in individual stocks do so outside your 401k with other money.
