Lady Gaga: My fans are 'my medicine, my religion' - News And Society

Lady Gaga appears in V magazine's summer 2011 edition, which is also their Asian issue. Lady Gaga appears in V magazine?s summer 2011 edition, which is also their Asian issue.

The connection isn?t obvious. What is Lady Gaga, of all people, doing on the cover of V magazine?s Asian issue?

But then the memory comes back: how quickly the singer sprang into action after Japan?s devastating earthquake and tsunami in March.

?I have such beautiful memories of Japan and its people. And when the earthquake happened I knew saying something just wasn?t enough,? Gaga told the magazine.

The key, she knew, was raising funds that could go towards aiding the ailing country and its citizens. And so she quickly started selling bracelets that read ?We Pray For Japan? in both English and Japanese.

?The Little Monsters have raised over $2 million purchasing these prayer bracelets I designed myself,? Gaga said. ?Let?s connect cultures from around the world and help rebuild this beautiful country.?

It?s a wonder the 25-year-old even has time for such a selfless act. The pop star?s career has moved at an astounding pace since she climbed to the top of the music charts in 2008.

?At a certain point exhaustion becomes a state of being, and mentally I have to be strong and overcome it,? she told her pal Elton John in an interview featured in the magazine.

?It?s like a cloud, a fog really that hovers over me,? Gaga explained. ?But in a way I will never ever escape it. Art is my whole life.?

It certainly helps that she has a strong fan base ? the aforementioned Little Monsters ? that keep her motivated to seemingly no end.

?The monsters are my medicine,? she admitted. ?They heal me, physically and emotionally, every night at the show.?

?I feel God through their love. I worship little monsters,? she continued. ?They?re my religion.?

Gaga?s comments make it easy to wonder what would happen if her listeners eventually decide to shower their devotion on the next great artist that comes along, as the fickle public usually does.

?Without them,? she told John, ?I don?t exist.?
