In Myck Kabongo?s return, Texas Longhorns beat Iowa State, 89-86, thanks to Sheldon McClellan?s run

When it really came down to it, the return of sophomore point guard Myck Kabongo from suspension and forward Jonathan Holmes from a hand injury didn?t matter much.

Instead, in double overtime, the Longhorns were left with the skeleton team they had played most of their season with, the result of Kabongo and Holmes both fouling out in the first overtime session.

What did matter, however, was the return of the confidence of Sheldon McClellan. In head coach Rick Barnes? doghouse for various periods of time throughout the season, McClellan carried the Longhorns to their third conference win, 89-86 over Iowa State.

In the second overtime frame, the Longhorns? leading scorer tied the game at 81-81 with a layup. He made two free throws to give them a two-point lead and then, with 1:16 remaining, made another layup to take the lead back, 85-84. Two more free throws, and Texas had an 87-86 lead. With 32 seconds left, McClellan ? chided for his poor defense all season ? stole a pass and made another pair of free throws.

McClellan finished with a team-high 18 points, just beating out freshman Connor Lammert, who scored a career-high 14 on 6-for-8 shooting.

Kabongo, making his season debut after sitting out all 23 games, made several key plays to get the Longhorns to overtime and fouled out on a charging call. He scored 13 points on 50 percent shooting and dished out seven assists.

Ioannas Papapetrou sent the game into overtime with a three-pointer from the right wing with 1.7 seconds remaining in regulation.

The Longhorns improved to 1-3 this season in overtime.
