An Indian and French partnership will make way for new solar power projects in the eastern part of India to help address the combined land, energy and water issues in the region.
Klystron Electronics Pvt. Ltd. from Kolkata and Ciel et Terre from France signed a memorandum of agreement to build floating solar photovoltaic plants using the latter?s ?hydrelio? technology.
The collaboration was facilitated by the European Business and Technology Center, a program co-funded by the European Union to assist clean technology opportunities between businesses, and academic and research institutions.
"As the name suggests, floating solar technology does not require land for its installation, the Eastern as well as North-Eastern region needs energy and has an abundance of water bodies,? said Gautam Ghosh, Klystron Electronics Pvt. Ltd.?s executive director.
?With the availability of floating solar, the region can contribute to the compensation of energy requirement to certain extent, especially in the rural areas. Support will be required from all stakeholders for the diffusion of such a useful technology,? he added.
According to E.B.T.C., the hydrelio system provides a reliable and eco-friendly way to save valuable land and convert a water area into a profitable large scale solar power plant, with maximum capacity of 50 megawatts.
It generates more energy than land-based system of a similar size and has a 30 year lifespan. By shielding the water from the sun?s heat, the floating solar P.V also reduces water evaporation, increasing return of investment, says Ciel et Terre.
Under the terms of the agreement, Klystron Electronics and Ciel et Terre will work together in evaluating and tapping the vast opportunities to further develop floating solar P.V. projects.
Suman Lahiri, E.B.T.C.?s regional manager, said this joint venture will help in deploying the technology, not just in West Bengal, but also across the water-rich areas in India. This is one of the initiatives that E.B.T.C. is implementing in the region. ? EcoSeed Staff
