Student Sexually Assaulted on College Campus

Security is tighter and students are more vigilant, after a sexual assault at a local college. Police say the attack happened on the campus of Notre Dame of Maryland University in North Baltimore.

It's the talk of campus where students are stirred and shaken by the news.? Candice Singleton, a sophomore, says when she heard, "I was just like at Notre Dame?? What time, how did it happen?? I was surprise, completely in shock," says Singelton.

The attack was first reported by campus police at Loyola University, which is located next door to Notre Dame.? The two universities share a library.

Investigators say someone attacked the student along a pathway, after she had left the library.. on her way back to her dorm on Notre Dame's campus.

Police say the man grabbed the young woman at knife point then sexually assaulted her.? It happened at about 3 o'clock Monday morning.? Rebecca Sawyer, Vice President of Student Life, says students and staff were then contacted by email and told what happened.? "We worked with the Baltimore city police department.. the student sought treatment," says Sawyer.? She added, "We stepped up our security patrols on campus."

Still, students like Amber Rippetoe say the incident has left them feeling a bit uneasy.? "I was freaked out at first.? But then, there's security all over the place now," says Rippetoe.?

Jim Mitchell, the school's Executive Director of Operations, says it's the first sexual assault at Notre Dame in recent years.. one of the few crimes of any kind on this quiet campus of 3000 students, mostly women...half of whom live on campus.? Mitchell says precautions are in place to help keep students safe, including emergency phones... where the push of a button immediately puts you in touch with campus police.

Meantime, investigators say they're working with a vague description of the suspect.? He's described as a White male in his 40's, about 5-feet, 10-inches tall, with a medium build.
